Mackey’s Morphine Madness: The 1869 Shootout at Charleston City Hall Political debate within Charleston’s City Council Chamber is sometimes harsh, but never as acrimonious as the night in late October 1869 when a pair of arguing aldermen drew their respective pistols to settle an overheated dispute.

Edward Tulane is a china rabbit who is loved by a young girl named Abilene. Dressed in fine silk clothes, Edward is conceited and takes Abiline and his life of luxury for granted. When his family travels on a ship to London, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and separated from Abilene. Thus begins Edward's journey as he is fortuitously passed along to various owners throughout the years. During his voyage, Edward is faced with the challenge of turning his attention away from his own vanity, and instead towards comforting someone else in need. Beautiful illustrations compliment this touching story about opening your heart to love. Bound to be a classic, this children’s story is recommended as a read-aloud for families with children age 8 and older. *Please note that readers may want to keep tissues nearby! - Reviewed by Jackie Peters, Children's Programming Coordinator
