Did you think I'd forgotten you? Not a chance! Especially not during October - National Family History Month. The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society reminds us that "Whether you're a seasoned researcher with a well-cited family tree, or you're just beginning to cultivate the desire to learn more about your past, this month presents a great opportunity to consider how you can improve your research skills and discover more ancestors." FHIG can surely help with that . . . The Family History Interest Group (FHIG) at Bernards Township Library aims to inform, inspire and encourage you as you seek ways to learn about the life, loves and relationships of past family members. This newsletter is the very best place to find information about upcoming and past FHIG meetings, news and notes about related topics, and ideas, tips and suggestions for your own successful genealogy searches. -- Ruth

A FHIG Roundtable Meeting Tuesday, October 23 with Help one another rekindle our interest in GENEALOGY. Family History Month is a perfect opportunity to start, refresh, expand, publish, share or investigate your family tree. Have you found yourself coming up with excuses for not starting? Has your research been stagnant and you don't know how to get going again? Bring an item of importance in your family story to SHOW, TELL about techniques that have proved particularly useful, or ASK a question that has been niggling and get some experienced help. Prefer just to listen? That's OK too. Please come! Those who are new to genealogy research are most welcome, as are those with experience. In the past, Roundtable Meetings have offered a wealth of information and awareness of various things that will assist your family history search. Don't miss this chance to share with and learn from other FHIG participants.

Lisa Kerr Ilowite will be with us once again with what is, for her, a novel topic -- "Using Everyday Documents to Understand an Ancestor’s Military Service." Like so many of you, Lisa is not a military expert. She says "this presentation will help us 'mere mortals' to understand what our ancestors did in the military. She plans to use three examples, one each from the War of 1812, the Civil War, and the Napoleonic War (a Scottish soldier in this non-U.S. conflict). We will learn how to use everyday documents to learn what he did, where he served, and how his military experience fit into the overall history of the war. Finding an ancestor who served in a major war can be exciting, and after Lisa's presentation we'll be much better able to find out what it really means!
