Are there 'Rockstar Genealogists' among us?
Many of you may remember Paul Howes, Chairman, Guild of One-Name Studies, www.one-name.org and who was an active participant and popular speaker at FHIG when he lived in Bernardsville some years back. Paul reached out to me to say both Russ Worthington and he are on a global list of genealogists in a 5th annual vote to find "Rock Stars" - those 'must see genealogy presenters/writers' - and would love your vote! A link to the site for voting is here: You do need to login with a Google or Gmail account to vote, and can vote for more than one person. You will see a good number of folk who have presented to FHIG! It's all in good fun . . .

Mark your calendars and join us at any and all of these FHIG meetings on Tuesdays in 2016: October 25 -- Online Descendant Research with Ken Kaufman November 22 --
Still no FHIG in December! |

Were you at the August meeting and confused about just where the September meeting will be held? It's understandable, since the flyers distributed that evening had a very mixed message. Here is the correct version! Please pay special attention to the instructions below; the September meeting will be a field trip, and not at the Library. The Family History Interest Group (FHIG) at Bernards Township Library aims to inspire and encourage you as you seek to learn about the life, loves and relationships of past family members. This newsletter is the place to find information about upcoming and past FHIG meetings, news and notes about related topics, and ideas, tips and suggestions for your own genealogy searches. -- Ruth

Tuesday, September 27 This FHIG meeting will be a FIELD TRIP to the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center of NJ at 135 Davidson Avenue Somerset, NJ 08873 Virtually all family historians have made use of records housed in archival repositories by visiting a repository in person, using digital images of archival materials on a repository's website, or indirectly through online databases. But most genealogists have at some point probably been intimidated or confused by how archives work and why they're organized the way they are. In his talk, Michael Andrec will introduce the principles that govern the work of archives professionals in the USA and in countries with which it shares an archival tradition (e.g., Great Britain, Canada, and Australia). He will focus on those aspects that are most relevant to family historians, such how to search for relevant collections and how to read and understand archival finding aids. Archives have much untapped potential if used creatively, and Mike's talk will try to get you past the "ancestry.com blinders" to explore non-traditional and unusual sources of information about your ancestors and the world they lived in. He will also provide a brief summary of the genealogy-related holdings of the Center and pointers to online resources for Ukrainian family history research. Where did your ancestor(s) live? Who did they work for? What churches or organizations might have they belonged to? What government agencies, private or public institutions, or "significant people" might they have interacted with? You never know what details about the type of life they lived you may find.

About Michael Andrec:Michael Andrec has been the archivist at the Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center of New Jersey since 2010. Mike has been tasked with single-handedly bringing the nearly 200 multi-lingual collections that the Center has accumulated since the 1960s up to professional standards of arrangement, description, preservation, and accessibility, while at the same time providing reference services, outreach, and web site/social media content. Outside of the archives, Michael is a consultant in data analytics, computer programming, and web design/development. He is a member of the Society of American Archivists, the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, the Association for Recorded Sound Collections, and currently serves as Treasurer of the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan NY.

Transportation and Parking Information:
I'm hoping most people can arrange their own transportation but am willing to match people up with rides if I can. If you are willing to pick up someone at the Library and give them a ride there and back, please let me know. Likewise, if you need a ride in order to attend and don't know anyone else to ask, shoot me a message. The Ukrainian Historical and Educational Center of NJ is at 135 Davidson Avenue, Somerset, NJ 08873 This is right off I-287 at Exit 10, north of New Brunswick (approximately 20 miles from the Library). We will be meeting in the side room of the building labeled "Ukrainian Cultural Center (auditorium and banquet facility)" on this map: https://www.ukrhec.org/visit/directions/center-map. Visitors can park in the large lot immediately off Davidson Avenue (between the street and the Cultural Center), and come in through the front door up the steps around the building to the right. Plan to get there a little before 7:00pm so we can start on time. If anybody needs handicapped access, please let me know. = = = = = = = = =
