with author Maryann McFadden Tuesday, August 28 Like so many of us, Maryann McFadden knew little of genealogy research techniques when she set out to discover and tell the true story of Tillie Smith, a poor kitchen maid who died in Hackettstown in 1886. An experienced author with three successful books
already published, Maryann worked closely with her sister, an avid genealogist, to uncover the details of Tillie’s short, sad life, and ultimately wove her tale into an historical novel published earlier this year, The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife. Join us at FHIG on August 28 to hear firsthand about the frustrations and successes of Maryann‘s research.

About Maryann McFadden In 2007 Maryann McFadden "won the literary lottery" according to writing blogs, when her previously self-published novel, The Richest Season, sold at auction to Hyperion Books. The Richest Season became a Target Breakout Novel and was awarded an Indie Next Pick by The American Booksellers Association. Her next 2 novels, So Happy Together and The Book Lover, are also Indie Next Picks. Her 4th novel, The Cemetery Keeper's Wife, is a historical novel set in her Northwest New Jersey hometown. Maryann is a speaker and writing coach, and loves to chat with book clubs. Her unusual publishing journey has inspired many aspiring authors. You can reach her at her website: maryannmcfadden.com She will have her book available for purchase at the meeting.

"Introduction to New Jersey Genealogy" the webinar presentation by Regina Fitzpatrick, NJ State Library Genealogy Librarian, was packed full of information about preparing for and visiting an archive or repository. So much of what she had to share is best practice for institutions of that kind anywhere, not just here in New Jersey. Want to explore her marvelous NJ State Library Genealogy Research Guide? Find that here.
