The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a time of celebration of the Western ideal of progress,
typified in the Columbian Exposition
and Victoria’s Jubilee, but this period also saw tremendous change in the West in terms of
women’s legal rights, access to education,
and indeed the whole idea of what should comprise a proper education.

Presenter: Rev. David Greenwood, Rector at Covenant Chapel in Basking Ridge, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh and is currently an Honorary Fellow at the University of
Aberdeen. His journal articles about the later Roman Empire have appeared in Harvard Studies
in Classical Philology, Ancient Philosophy, Classical Quarterly, Classical Philology,
and Translation and Literature, among others.
