There seems to be a renewed interest in space travel lately. It started for me in the spring of 2016 with the debut of Cosmos 2 with Neil deGrasse Tyson. I learned so much from this excellent program. The latest was the TV series Mars on the National Geographic Channel. In between there were multiple launches and landings from the commercial company Space X founded by Elon Musk. His plan is to begin sending rockets to Mars in 2 years with the end game of colonizing Mars. (Listen to his speech on Making Life Multiplanetary at www.spacex.com. Currently his rockets fly cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station.
Which brings me to our upcoming program at the library: Living In Space: Life on the International Space Station on Friday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m. I hope you’ll join us for this program presented by Frank O'Brien, a NASA Solar System Ambassador and local resident. He has lent his spaceflight history expertise to NASA for 20 years as a contributing editor for NASA's Apollo Lunar Surface Journal and is co-editor of the Apollo Flight Journal. You can read his biographical information at solarsystem.nasa.gov.
Did you know that over two hundred astronauts have lived and worked on board the International Space Station on six month to yearlong missions? These crews, each composed of 6 astronauts, have conducted countless experiments in science and health. What has been learned from these missions is essential for a much longer trip to Mars.
So if your interest in space, space travel and colonizing Mars has been piqued, come to this fascinating program and check out some of the many books we have on space travel.

Are you a high school student who is interested in leading a group to earn community service hours? The library is currently soliciting teens for possible community service projects to be held at the library on Wednesday evenings, for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. While it would be great to have a library-oriented theme, it is not absolutely necessary. Interested teens should contact Mrs. Murphy by email to murphy@cranburypubliclibrary.org with a short description of your idea. Please respond by May 19.

This February I will be presenting the first of a two-part series on how to use Microsoft Excel. This month’s class will take place on Thursday, February 16th at 1:00 p.m. It will be an introductory overview of Excel for beginners. Excel is a very powerful tool that you can use in your everyday life to organize lists and address labels, create household budgets, and much more. Once you learn the basics, you’ll discover many reasons to use this versatile program.
Do you have boxes full of recipe cards or folders full of pages torn from food magazines? To coincide with our 2017 “Booking the Cooks” programming theme, I will present Organize your Recipes Digitally, on Thursday, February 23rd at 7:00 p.m. This program will discuss how to digitize and organize those recipes so that they are available to you on any of your electronic devices.
Save the date for NJ Makers Day 2017 on Saturday, March 25th from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.! This year will be an event not to miss with tons of Science, Technology and Engineering activities for all ages. There is even an Escape Room Challenge! Stay tuned for details!
