Thursday, October 19th at 6:30pm: Music from Mexico, the Southwest, and Early California Presented by Los Gu'achis Sponsored by Friends & Foundation, St Helena Public Library. A community event for all ages. Refreshments will be served. Come and join us and listen to a California-based quintet that plays instrumental music of the Mexico, the Southwest and, Early California. The program begins with a brief introduction to the music, its origins and importance and an explanation of the different instruments used. Los Gu’achis is a Petaluma, California-based quintet that plays instrumental music of the Southwest, Early California, Mexico and other places. The group name derives from the Gu-Achi Fiddlers, members of a Native American tribe in southern Arizona. Members of the tribe developed a unique musical sound influenced first in 1539 from Spanish missionaries.

Thursday, October 26th at 6:30pm: Dia de los Muertos/ Day of the Dead Altar Workshop Presented by Calpulli Nanahuatzin Sponsored by Friends & Foundation, St Helena Public Library. A community event for all ages. Materials will be provided. Learn to build an altar for Dia de Los Muertos. Dia de Los Muertos is Mexican tradition that honors, celebrates and remembers those who have passed on and are no longer with us in this world. Join us as we share of it’s indigenous origins and how the tradition has evolved over time. Calpulli Nanahuatzin thrives to preserve the traditions and teachings of the Mexica (Aztec) ancestors through dance—corporal and spiritual prayers—and thought. The members of the group are inter-generational and are dedicated to building a community based on the spiritual philosophy of the ancient Mexicas. Calpulli Nanahuatzin is actively engaged with a broad community to promote not only cultural pride and awareness but also the wise philosophies of our ancestors.
