What Makes the Fort Myers Regional Library Genealogy Room Unique?
  1. Our dedicated Genealogy Room is available to genealogy researchers during regular library hours.
  2. Extended one-on-one help sessions are available by appointment with experienced genealogists and subject specialists.  This free service is only offered at the Fort Myers Regional Library.
  3. The Genealogy Room contains the largest genealogy collection in Southwest Florida, with over 800 published family histories, as well as printed research materials for 50 states and 55 foreign countries.
  4. The Fort Myers Regional Library is a Family History Library Affiliate, which means that genealogy researchers have access to the Family History Library’s non-copyrighted digitized microfilm records.
  5. Genealogy researchers may use our research computers up to five hours per person per day.
  6. Free genealogy databases are available to patrons with a valid Lee County Library System card.  Options include Ancestry Library Edition (the library’s subscription to Ancestry); Fold 3 (available only at the Fort Myers Regional Library), Family Search, and Heritage Quest.  Our print holdings and databases enable world-wide research capability.
  7. The Genealogy Room offers scanning capability for books, pictures, and maps.  Patrons can print copies for .10 per page or save images to their flash drives for free.
  8. Microfilm/fiche scanners are available in the Genealogy Room and Microfilm Room.
  9. The Fort Myers Regional Library has News-Press microfilm from 1884 to the present, and New York Times micofilm from 1851 to the present.  Patrons can do obituary lookups or other research. Lookups also may be requested by email or phone.
  10. Several obituary indexes to the News-Press are available.  The longest running index was developed by the Lee County Genealogical Society, Inc. and includes Lee County deaths for 1930-1997.  Access to the index is available via the Society’s webiste www.lcgsfl.org.
  11. Over 200 study guides on a wide variety of genealogical and ethnic research topics are available to genealogy researchers.
  12. Free printed copies of genealogical research forms (family group sheets, pedigree charts, research planning sheets, etc.) may be obtained in the Genealogy Room.
