A gentleman in Moscow : A Novel
by Amor Towles
Deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal in 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest in a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin, where he endures life in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history unfold. By the best-selling author of Rules of Civility. I listened to this on audio narrated by Nicholas Guy Smith, which enhanced the reading experience for me. Count Alexander Rostov, who is sentenced by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution to a lifetime of house arrest, slowly builds a life within the confines of the Moscow's luxurious Metropol Hotel. The book tracks the Count's life from the Revolution to the Cold War; 30 years of tumultuous history taking place on the doorstep of the hotel.
