Spotlight On: Ashley Maraffino
The Adult Department has a new supervisor: Ashley Maraffino. Ashley comes to us from Valley Cottage Library, where she was the head of Adult Services for five years. She has a master’s degree in library and information science, with a concentration in rare books and special collections, from Long Island University. What attracted you to working at PRPL? It’s a library that’s on the cusp of some big changes! Eugenia, the director, has a lot of forward-thinking ideas to improve the library’s services and offerings. This is a great community that truly loves and values its library. I am excited to be here and be a part of that. What are your plans for the Adult Department? The adult services librarians have already done some pretty great things. Coffee Talk with Jim, the Sunday concert series, tech librarian on call, are just a few examples. I’m looking for us to build on these successes, increase and diversify our offerings, and provide programs and services that the community wants. If you have an idea for something you’d like to see at the library, come talk to me! What do you like most about working in libraries? The people, of course! I love being able to chat about books, connect with people through programming, and help someone find the right answer to their question. Additionally, I really like how varied the work can be. There can be a misconception that librarians sit around and read books all day. That would be an excellent job to have, but it couldn’t be further from the truth! We’re selecting and ordering the books and materials to fill the shelves, maintaining the many collections in the library, creating displays, planning and running programming, providing technology help, doing outreach to the community to increase awareness about how awesome the library is and what resources we can provide, participating in professional organizations, and so much more.
