Meet Naomi

"Hi, can I help you with something?" I must say that fifty times a day, checking in with you, our patrons, who come to the Adult Reference desk. There are so many things we can help you with -- finding books, finding information online, using the library's e-resources, and so much more. But one of my favorite ways to help people is to find something they might enjoy reading, no matter the format. While I try not to only promote what I enjoy reading, there is no question that mysteries are a favorite, I'm happy to talk about the different types - cozy, hard-boiled, procedural, and more -- as well as to try to suggest authors you haven't read yet. I'm still mourning the fact that the late Sue Grafton never got to finish the alphabet. Her last book in the Kinsey Milhone series was to have been Z is for Zero.

Another direction I go in reading is narrative non-fiction. What's that? It's those non-fiction books that draw you in to a historical era, or a particular branch of science, and make the journey as enjoyable as reading a novel. Have you read The Boys in the Boat? Try it, and you'll see what I mean. Or pretty much anything by Erik Larson, author of Devil in the While City and Dead Wake, among many others. Pick up something by Simon Winchester, and you'll find yourself transported. Stop by the Reference desk next time you're in the building; my colleagues and I are always ready to talk books or whatever you're looking for!

Wednesday, February 7 at 6:30 pm Experience the excitement of African Dance performed by Chiku Awali African Dance Company. The Chiku Awali African Dance Company of Rockland, Inc. brings the sound of drums and the excitement of African dance to our Rockland County community. West African dance tells a story. Some of the dances performed by Chiku Awali include Lamba and Funga which are dances of welcome, KouKou and Gundi, celebration dances for a good fishing catch, and Triba, a dance of celebration and happiness. In all African cultures, dances are participatory. Chiku Awali is known for getting its audience involved, especially in Funga. Drummers and their drums nurture the heart and soul of dancers. Chiku Awali cultivates this craft through the Chiku Awali Obibini Asafo of Drums, which means the African Society of Drums in the Twi language of the Asante of Ghana. The big drum, the Dun Dun maintains the bass, while the jembe players keep the various parts of the rhythm. Stop by the library to pick-up your free ticket at the Children's Services desk or call (845) 786 - 3800 x 25. Friday, February 17 at 4 pm Bring in 2018, the Year of the Dog, with paper crafts including lanterns and origami. Gong Xi Fa Cai (Happy New Year)!
