Naomi Wolf's Outrages
Some of you may remember that we'd selected Naomi Wolf's new book, Outrages, for the History and Current Events newsletter in August. But its June release in the U.S. was postponed, though it's available in Australia and the U.K. While the book got great reviews before complaints about the accuracy of Wolf's research came to light, we're not comfortable highlighting it ("she got her stuff really, really wrong," said NextReads selector Kaitlin), especially given that it will not be on bookshelves in U.S. libraries. Should the errors be corrected and the book be released in the future, we'll make sure to add it to the appropriate newsletter, as we do with all books with postponed pub dates.

What Can I Read Instead? For patrons who had been looking forward to this book, we suggest you point them to Indecent Advances, by James Polchin, instead. With its focus on U.S. history, it won't fit the bill for everyone, but like Outrages it illuminates the criminalization of homosexuality. You can even add it to your draft of the August History and Current Events newsletter, if you wish. For additional suggestions, check out (and print and post!) this flyer, which features LGBTQIA history and historical fiction for adults.
