New Opening Hours

Banff Public Library is pleased to announce that, starting September 8, we will be open to the public Monday through Sunday from 12:00pm-4:00pm, excluding stat holidays. We will also continue to offer services by appointment every day from 10:00am-12:00pm.

Patrons will be able to browse the collection, pick up holds from other library locations, use the public computers/printer, and access quiet study areas. Exam proctoring services will also be available.

Public seating and the number of public computer stations will be limited, and patrons are encouraged to limit their stay to 60 minutes. Members from the same household are welcome to visit the Library together, but children must remain with their parents/caregivers at all times.

Please refrain from visiting the Library if you might be experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, runny nose, sore throat, etc. If you have traveled outside of the country in the last 14 days or have been in close contact with someone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the last 14 days, you must remain at home and are legally required to isolate.

As per the Town of Banff's Temporary Mask Bylaw, all library patrons must wear a mask while visiting the Library, and single-use, non-medical masks will be available at the front entrance. All library staff will be wearing masks in the public area. Information on the proper use, cleaning, and disposal of non-medical masks can be found on the Alberta Government's website.

Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the building, and all high-touch surface areas, such as keyboards, touchscreens, tabletops, countertops, etc., will be sanitized on a regular basis. The public washrooms will be open and monitored for cleanliness on a regular basis as well.

Twenty-five library items can be borrowed at a time, and our regular loan periods and renewal options apply. All borrowed items will be quarantined for 72 hours upon return.

Our Pick-Up and Home Delivery Services will still be available at this time, and we are happy to make recommendations. All libraries in The Regional Automated Consortium (TRAC) have now resumed lending, and patrons can once again request items listed in the TRAC catalogue.

Banff Public Library is committed to providing a safe and welcoming space to our patrons and staff, and we will continue to monitor the COVID-19 updates from the Alberta Government and the Town of Banff to inform our services and procedures.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we help to maintain the health and wellness of our community, and we look forward to seeing you at the Library again soon!

Habituate, Acclimate

"Habituate, Acclimate" features the works of two emerging Alberta photographers, Nahanni McKay and Liam Kavanagh-Bradette. Both artists have created a series that explore emerging survival dependencies necessitated by the effects that humans have had on the environment.

In the summer of 2016, McKay was working as a campground attendant at Two Jack Lake in Banff National Park when a wolf was euthanized after becoming habituated to human food. The incident had a lasting impression on the artist. She began to question the role of national parks as tourist destinations and the location of the campground within an active wildlife corridor. The title of her series, "Loop 14," is a reference to the location where the wolf was shot. Mckay’s photographs pay homage to the spirit of that wolf and the five additional wolves that died of unnatural causes in Banff that summer.

Kavanagh-Bradette’s work is also related to a food supply dependency but in relation to the people of Nunavut who rely on freight shipments from southern Canada to deliver essential cargo (food, goods, and fuel). Since the beginning of the twentieth century, climate change has opened up the seaways and drastically changed Inuit economy and culture. Kavanagh-Bradette brings attention to this new reality through his photographs of the people working at the forefront of the change.
