Readers enjoyed a wonderful opportunity recently, to hear author David Grann describe the research and development of his award-winning book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. Grann’s history-mystery was selected for the 2019 Sarasota County Libraries & Historical Resources One Book/One Community series. Participants have been consistently effusive in their praise for both the book and Grann’s presentations. To hear the “story behind the story” directly from the author is an incredible gift to readers, especially for those eager to understand how the idea kernel popped into a book. For movie watchers there is a parallel with the bonus materials, including narratives featuring comments by film directors, editors, actors, set designers and other members of the crew. For example, to learn that the movie Cold Mountain was primarily filmed in Romania (and why), to understand the process to cast the basketball players in Hoosiers, and to hear Robert Redford describe his decision to accept a role in The Old Man and the Gun, has added immensely to my enjoyment of the films and often inspired a return to read the book, again.
