Children's Books in World Languages

Did you know that Garden Home Community Library has children's books in languages other than English?

We offer a small collection of books in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Vietnamese, as well as a larger collection of Spanish books. Stop by to find graphic novels, juvenile fiction, board books, picture books, early readers, non-fiction and books for teens (young adult).

Titles in these and other languages are also available at other WCCLS member libraries. You can search the catalog for "World Languages", then filter for specific language and audience (adult, children or teen).

Some of our fellow libraries even have collections of foreign films. WCCLS has 593 French films, 566 Spanish, over 170 films in both German and Japanese, and 120 Hindi films. Find them in the WCCLS catalog. Again, you can add filters for audience and language.

Library Bookshelf: Holly P.
Meet Holly P., a Garden Home Community Library Association Board member since 2017.

Besides this list of recent favorites, she also recommends Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese (editor's note: this is seconded by GHCL staffers Heather & Molly) and Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, an author she loves.

Holly loves to travel, but time and money can be limited. However, she says, "Imagination is not! I spend many hours researching and planning trips that I might take, someday. It's wonderful to learn about new places and dream." She also attends fun events, such as TikiKon (see picture at left).

Get to know Holly and other GHCLA Board members on our website.

Local Scene: Warren C Easley
This month we're featuring the Cal Claxton Mystery Series by Warren C. Easley. A former research scientist and international business executive, Easley is the award-winning author of this series, which is set in Oregon. There are currently 8 books. Easley received a Kay Snow Award for fiction in 2012 and was named the Northwest's Up and Coming Author in 2017, both honors bestowed by Willamette Writers. His fifth Cal Claxton book, Blood for Wine, was shortlisted for a Nero Award in 2018. The eighth, No Witness, earned him the 2022 Spotted Owl Award from Friends of Mystery for the best mystery novel by a Pacific Northwest author.
All Ages & Family Events
Wednesdays, December 7 & 14, 10:00-10:45 am

Join us for our live and in-person weekly storytime! Our storytime books and activities are ideal for kids ages 3-8, and the entire family is welcome to join in the fun. Together, we will read, write, sing, talk, and play--these are five fun and powerful ways to strengthen the skills that we use when we read.

NOTE: No storytime December 21 & 28. We are taking a short storytime break during the holidays and look forward to seeing you again in 2023!  During this time, you can find past prerecorded storytimes and other programming on Facebook and YouTube.

We also have three more online Bilingual Hindi Storytime with Bakul  sessions on the schedule, Thursdays at 10 am through December 15. Join us from home in your jammies! Kids will learn new Hindi words and enjoy rhymes and stories. Stories will be told in both Hindi and English. Register online for a Zoom invite. No library card is required to register. If accommodations would help you attend, please ask! This program is provided through a partnership between the Garden Home Community & North Plains Public Libraries.

December 10: Origami Forest Animal Puppets: rabbits
December 17: Unicorn Crowns

All Ages Silent Dance Party
Bring Your Own Music
Tuesday, December 27 from 6-8 pm

We're dusting off the disco lights and opening Ge-Room (#7 in the Rec Center) for a pre-New Year's Dance Party. No need to register, just bring yourself, your headphones, your music player, and anyone else who loves to dance. We'll provide the disco lights!
Adult Events
Test your trivia knowledge at this month's virtual Nerd Night Trivia for Adults on the first Tuesday, December 6 at 6:30 pm. In December we'll have a set of our favorite questions from this year, music, and 2 other themes that have yet to be determined. Bonus points that can be used at a future trivia night or a physical prize are awarded to the teams with the highest and lowest number of points. Teams of up to 5 are allowed. Playing with a team is recommended as we generally ask hard questions, but you can play solo. Register to receive the meeting link, answer sheet and a freebie question on the day of the event.

In December our Book Group will decide what we want to read from February 2023 onward. This month we will only meet once - Tuesday, December 13 - and we are starting early at 6:30 pm. Each person brings 2 books to recommend to the group. Be prepared to talk about it. We have specific requirements for recommendations, so check our event listing for your homework.
