I hope everyone is well and staying somewhat sane at home right now. If you want some recommendations to keep you occupied and keep your mind off things, here are some from that I have from Hoopla.
My first few recommendations are all 90s or early 2000s romcoms/feel-good movies: Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30, and She's All That. Legally Blonde is the least romantic of the bunch. It's one of my favorites because it's very Girl Power without being condescending or preachy. 13 Going on 30 and She's All That are much more stereotypical romantic comedy. Both are predictable and definitely follow a formula, but in a really enjoyable way. If I had to pick one out of the two, it'd be 13 Going on 30, it's really sweet and has some great acting from Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo.
I wouldn't be me if I didn't recommend a Sam Rockwell movie. My favorite from the ones available on Hoopla is Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. It's based on the book of the same title by Chuck Barris (creator of The Newlywed Game and The Gong Show) and tells of his time in the CIA. Sam does a brilliant job of playing Chuck, and the movie lets the viewer decide whether the story is true or not. It's entertaining and at times a bit wacky and fantastical.
If you're in the mood for a TV show, I would recommend Grounded for Life. Its a sitcom about a dysfunctional family living in Staten Island. The characters and family dynamic are realistic. They're at times at each other's throats, but at the end of the day (or the 22 minute episode), you know they care about each other. It's extremely funny and clever as well.
I'm going to lose some of you with my final movie recommendation. I will warn that it's a terrible movie, there's nothing good about it. But, that's what I love about it. If you like movies so bad that they'e somehow enjoyable, one of the best is Birdemic. Everything from the dialog, to the painfully bad CG birds, to the way the protagonist walks are pure unintentional comedy gold.
