For January's Indie Movie Night, we watched Blinded by the Light. It was a touching story about a boy who discovers Bruce Springsteen's music and sees parallels of the lyrics in his own life.
The movie tells the story of Javed, a Pakistani boy growing up in 1980's England (I swear I watch movies other than musical coming of age tales about British boys in the 1980s!). Javed has a passion for writing, he keeps a daily diary along with writing his own poetry and lyrics for his best friend Matt's band. His dad isn't supportive of his passion, he'd prefer Javed stick to his studies and help out with the household expenses. Through the only other South Asian student at school, Javed discovers The Boss. The lyrics inspire him to continue with his writing, despite his frustrations with his home life.
The movie uses the music to tell Javed's story, to show the parallels of the musician's and the character's working class upbringing. Javed hears his struggles with not only class, but also racism and wanting to have his voice heard against both family traditions and social expectations in the lyrics. The story is both eye opening and feel-good. It manages to leave you happy without feeling overly cheesy and it tackles its heavy subjects with integrity and honesty.
