The Book Bag February 2020
Books & Brews You want to get together with other bibliophiles to talk about that great book you just read, but that's the thing. You want to read what you choose, not a title that met the group consensus. We get it! Everyone has their own tastes in books as in many other things in life. If that describes how you feel, Books & Brews may meet your needs. - You read what you like
- You learn about other titles from fellow attendees
- You get to share your excitement about a great book - or your disappointment in a book that just didn't quite live up to your expectations
- You spend time with fellow bookworms
That's a win-win-win-win! Erin, who facilitates this group, does assign a genre for each meeting just so that there is some variety month to month. For example, people were asked to read a book from the Young Adult genre in January to discuss at the February 3rd meeting. Not a specific book in the Young Adult category, each person picked one in which they were interested. Many of the library's book groups meet in community locations besides one of the three libraries. That may mean less of a distance to travel or just provide a relaxing atmosphere conducive to great conversation. This is true for Books & Brews which meets at Jamestown Tavern in Marblehead on the first Monday of every month. Discussions start at 6:30 pm. We hope you will join us!
- Books & Brews and/or Words & Wine - Read a book of your choice (or more than one!!) and attend!
- Pulitzer Prize Book Club - visit the customer service desk at the Marblehead Peninsula Branch Library to request the current book or attend a meeting where books will be available for the next month.
- The current titles for all other groups are available at the customer service desk at the main library in Port Clinton. Or you may choose to attend a club meeting and pick up next month's book.
Most titles are available in standard print, large print, and audio. Pick the format most comfortable for you.

The soul of America : the battle for our better angels
by Jon Meacham
To better understand the present moment in American politics, we must look back at critical times in our history when hope overcame division and fear. Meacham shows us how what Abraham Lincoln called the "better angels of our nature" have repeatedly won the day during turning points in American history. Among other subject, he writes about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the birth of the Lost Cause; the anti-Communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy; and Lyndon Johnson's crusade to finish the fight against Jim Crow

The staff at Erie Islands Library have had several requests to start the Cookbook Club up again. They are planning a get together to discuss ideas and possible themes for the next couple of months. Other questions to be answered are what night/time works best, determining a place to hold meetings each month or do we meet at members' homes? The organizational meeting will be held at the Erie Islands Library on Wednesday Feb 5th at 2:00. If you are unable to attend, please let the library know that you are interested and your thoughts on a satisfying experience for you. Coffee and tea will be available at the meeting.
