Welcome to April in the Children's Library! Our regular storytimes will be on break from April 1 to May 4, but there’s still plenty happening at the Children's Library! While we plan for our spring/summer storytime session, which will run from May 5 to August 3, we invite you to join us for some exciting programs. In celebration of Earth Day on April 20, we’re hosting a month-long scavenger hunt! Discover Huntington Beach’s local plants and wildlife as you search for clues throughout the Children’s Library. Additionally, the Main Street and Oak View branch libraries will continue to offer their weekly Fun with Friends programs throughout the month. On April 8 and 9, Ballet Etudes returns with a captivating presentation of Peter Pan. Join Wendy, John, and Michael as they encounter the magical Tinkerbell and adventurous Peter Pan. Showtimes are at 4:30 PM and 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased by clicking the icon below. For kids aged 8 to 12, our Tween S.T.E.A.M. Team will meet on April 10 to explore a fun science, technology, engineering, art, or math-themed concept. Looking for a family-friendly activity during spring break? Join us for a movie night on Monday, April 14, featuring a screening of The Wild Robot! We look forward to seeing you at the library! Want the latest updates from HBPL? Follow us on social media!

The Importance of Play in Early Literacy Play is a vital component of early literacy, providing children with rich opportunities to explore language, develop critical thinking skills, and foster creativity. Through play, children engage with stories, experiment with new vocabulary, and practice communication in a natural and enjoyable way. Activities like role-playing, storytelling, and interactive games encourage social interaction, enhance problem-solving abilities, and build a foundation for reading and writing. By integrating play into their learning experiences, children not only strengthen their literacy skills but also cultivate a lifelong love of learning, making it an essential part of their developmental journey. Tip: Incorporating play into early literacy can be both fun and effective! Use everyday moments to engage in playful reading, such as acting out scenes from a favorite story or creating puppet shows based on characters. Encourage children to explore letters through games like letter scavenger hunts or alphabet puzzles. Incorporate imaginary play by inviting them to create their own stories, setting up dramatic play areas where they can role-play different characters or scenarios. You can also integrate art and music by having them illustrate their own tales or sing rhymes. By weaving play into these activities, you’ll nurture a love for literacy while enhancing their learning experience.
