Welcome to January in the Children's Library!

January brings a fresh start and the return of storytimes and children’s programming across the Children’s Library. Our winter programming session kicks off January 5, with storytimes resuming at the Central Library and Branch Libraries. There is plenty of excitement in store for families this month!

One important update for the new year: Pajama Story Nights has moved. Beginning Monday, January 5, Pajama Story Nights will now take place on the first Monday evening of each month in the Tabby Theater. This cozy family storytime is designed for children ages 5–9, with pajamas and stuffed animals encouraged.

Read to a Dog returns on Saturday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m. in the Talbert Room. Children of all ages are invited to read aloud to certified therapy dogs from Go Team Therapy Dogs.

Tweens ages 8–12 can join the Tween S.T.E.A.M. Team on Wednesday, January 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Talbert Room. This monthly club meets every second Wednesday and features hands-on activities, crafts, and opportunities to learn while having fun.

Our youngest library visitors are invited to celebrate Winnie the Pooh’s Birthday Bash on Saturday, January 17 from 10:00–11:00 a.m. in the Talbert Room. This special program for infants and toddlers (ages 0–2) includes gentle games, cozy playtime, a brief baby storytime, and simple crafts.

Families can dance and move with Dance Along with Ballet Etudes! on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. in the Tabby Theater. Dancers will demonstrate ballet movements and invite children to dance along in this joyful introduction to storytelling through movement.

Celebrate National LEGO Day at the LEGO Kids Club – Tween Speed Building Challenge on Tuesday, January 27 at 3:00 p.m. in the Talbert Room. Tweens ages 8–12 will race to complete a LEGO kit, with prizes awarded and kits to keep. A regular LEGO Club will take place at the same time for builders of all ages.

The Wise Owl Tween Book Club meets on Wednesday, January 28 at 4:00 p.m. in the B Room. The first 15 registered readers will receive a copy of this month’s middle-grade novel to keep. Readers are encouraged to finish the book before the meeting to enjoy a thoughtful discussion.

Talking, Playing, and Learning Every Day

Everyday conversations and play are powerful tools for building early literacy skills! Talk with your child about what you see, hear, and do together - whether you’re making breakfast, running errands, or playing at home. Asking open-ended questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “How does this feel?” helps children build vocabulary, practice listening, and learn how language works. Simple games, songs, and pretend play also support early reading skills while making learning fun.

Looking for fun books to read to your child? Visit the library and ask a librarian for suggestions based on your child’s age and interests. Don’t forget to check our Event Calendar for upcoming events and activities programs!
