Adult Programs
Color Your World

In the spirit of this year’s “Color Your World” Summer Reading theme, we’re asking you, our patrons, to tell us about the things that will forever color your recent memories. Each month, June through August, we’ll be sharing prompts through our social media channels, facebook.com/AlohaLibrary and on Instagram @AlohaCommunityLibrary, to spark community reflection and conversation about the recent books you read, movies & TV shows you watched, technology that increasingly became a part of your life, and the communities with which you’ve shared them. Be on the lookout for those prompts or send us your response as a reply to this newsletter if you’re not on social media!

For June, send us your text, video, or visual media response to the prompt, “The stories that brought color to my world recently were _________________.”

At the end of August, we’ll take all of the responses we gather and turn them into a collection of crowd-sourced recommendations and resources to be shared with our community. All respondents will also be entered into an end-of-Summer giveaway of fun prizes including WCCLS pint glasses, Aloha Community Library tote bags, and Baja Fresh gift baskets courtesy of our generous donors!

This is a collection of essays about observation, fascination, time, memory, love, and how we make sense of the world around us, but the unifying theme is a sense of wonder. (Our next book, which we will chat about on 7/7, will be One by One by Ruth Ware!)

Early African-American Composers
Wednesday, June 23 from 5:30 to 6:30pm

This generation of Black composers, largely born to formerly enslaved parents, had a huge impact on music, but often had to make difficult compromises to reach white audiences. In this online program, we’ll feature music by W.C. Handy, father of the blues; Shelton Brooks, composer of “Strutter’s Ball”; James Bland, one of America’s first famous Black composers who had hits as early as 1879; and of course, Scott Joplin and his famous rag, “The Entertainer.” Cherry and Jerry, a piano and percussion duo from St. Louis, will present a lively show featuring ragtime, jazz, blues, and Broadway. You'll hear some well-known hits as well as some rarely heard gems from back in the day. Registration required to attend; please visit https://bit.ly/ACLeaac to sign up.
