Book Club
Our next book club selection is The Water Dancer by Ta-Nehisi Coates!* He is a brilliant nonfiction writer who used those same keen research habits to inform this novel, set in pre-Civil War Virginia. Like in Toni Morrison's Beloved and Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad, magical realism is incorporated to spellbinding effect. It's a coming-of-age story that's deeply meaningful, and also a real page-turner.

The Water Dancer is available to reserve from our catalog in multiple formats, including downloadable audiobook.

*Note: Our February book title was listed incorrectly in some of our previous marketing, but The Water Dancer is the correct title for February's discussion. We apologize for any confusion!

Moving Pictures
Explore a particular film – sometimes popular, sometimes obscure – in each monthly newsletter. Valentine's Day is on the way and if you're looking for a quality romance... look no further!

Love & Basketball tells the story of Monica and Quincy, two next door neighbors and childhood sweethearts whose connection to each other is forged through a shared love of basketball. It's a movie with something (well, a lot) for everyone. You don't need to even like basketball to enjoy the richness of the romantic and family relationships, and if romances usually aren't for you, there is a good chance this one will be an exception.

Somehow, this movie is both popular and obscure. In 2012, it was included in an Entertainment Weekly list of "The Best 50 Movies You've Never Seen". By 2020, the avalanche of articles and interviews celebrating its 20th anniversary showed that it had developed a wide and passionate audience.
