ghoul-brarians Jesse and Katie on
Zoom

All ages welcome.

Visit the library for Halloween fun on Saturday, October 30th from 12-3pm. We'll have physically distanced stations with games, crafts, prizes, refreshments, and yes – you guessed it! – candy! Masks required for everyone aged 5 or older. Costumes strongly encouraged! Please also join our virtual Halloween Parade by sending a photo of your family to info@alohalibrary.org.

Adult Winter Clothing Drive
Wet, cold weather is coming. Not everyone in Aloha has a warm coat or dry socks. Did you know that...

...during the 2019/2020 school year, 65% of Aloha High School students were identified as economically disadvantaged?

...Beaverton School District students are eligible for the Clothes for Kids program if they need assistance?

...adults get cold, too?
A rack of warm coats.
It's clear that students identified as needing assistance come from families with adults who are also in need. At the library, we meet many folks living without enough resources. We need your help to help them.

We are collecting winter clothing items for adults at the library through Saturday, October 30th. Our hope is to distribute them to our local community at the library in November. If we do not receive enough donations, we will donate on to a larger drive.

What we need: New or gently used and cleaned items in adult sizes
  • Cold weather coats and jackets
  • Socks (new in sealed packages)
  • Underwear (new in sealed packages)
  • Warm clothing, like sweaters, sweatshirts/pants, etc.
  • Sleeping bags
  • Blankets
  • Hand warmers
  • Winter gloves
  • Winter hats
  • Waterproof shoes/boots
Drop your donations off in the bin near the front of the library any time during service hours (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 1-6pm and Thursday, Friday, Saturday from 10am-3pm).

If you have questions, please email Adult Services Librarian John. We're so grateful for your support of our whole community!

School Supply Success!
With the incredible help of all our supporters and community members who generously contributed backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and so much more to our back to school supply drive, we were able to distribute supplies to local families in need for even longer than just the one-day free store event we had originally planned. Because of you, more than one hundred and forty local kids received free school supplies from the library.

Tables full of school supplies such as binders and notebooks.
Many families who had not visited the library before were introduced to us in a positive way. Kids proudly showed off their new backpacks full of supplies and free books on their way out the door. Heartfelt gratitude was shared by their parents, several of whom told us they did not know how they were going to afford school supplies this year.
From all of us – thank you so much!

Library Raffle
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our recent library raffle! Our three lucky prizewinners have been randomly selected and notified of their wins. Between all of you, raffle ticket sales raised $1,330 towards library operations, and it's hard to think of a better ninth birthday gift we could have received from our community!
Books shaped into a heart.
If you missed our raffle but would still like to give in support of the library, don't fret – we gratefully accept donations all year long online and in the library. Thank you for your support!

Book Club
While it still feels like summer (kind of, sometimes), we wanted a fun, light read as our next book club selection, and The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal fits the bill perfectly! Set in a small Midwestern town (which could stand in for so many others), the story follows sisters Edith and Helen, and Edith's granddaughter Diana. It is about endearing characters following their passions, and the possibility of reinvention in old age. You don't have to love beer to find this one intoxicating! Join our discussion live on Zoom on Wednesday, October 6th from 6:30-7:30pm.

Can't make it this month? Our next book, which we'll chat about on Wednesday, November 3rd, will be The Burning Girls by C.J. Tudor.

Moving Pictures
Explore a particular film with us – sometimes popular, sometimes obscure – in each monthly newsletter! For October, we're taking a critically praised, Oscar-winning movie (best original screenplay in 2017) and illuminating its influences. Most of these are also well-known, but the reasons behind their relevance give insight into the creative process and deepen the appreciation of this month's selection:
Get Out!
Movie poster or cover art for Jordan Peele's "Get Out".
Any time is the right time for this modern classic, but it's an obvious choice for the season of scares and eerie excitement. Writer/director Jordan Peele calls Get Out a "social thriller" instead of a horror movie. It's a term he coined to describe "thriller/horror movies where the ultimate villain is society." Social thrillers "all deal with the human monster, the societal monster" – but the movie never feels like a civics lesson. For all the precision of its craft and poignance of its commentary, it's also hilarious.

Visit Adult Services Librarian John's list of movies that Peele has either cited as direct inspirations or as other examples of "social thrillers," including some more comedy hybrids.

Events & Programs
There's more going on at the library than just what we've got room for in this issue of our newsletter! Visit our online calendar to check out what we have scheduled this month for all ages.
