Storytime Schedule Update
Starting November 1st, storytime will be offered once per week. We're excited to continue hosting Pajama Storytime at 10:30am on Fridays via Zoom with our friends Narwhal and Unicorn. Don't forget we also have a lot of storytime videos recorded – you can have storytime anytime! Find them online here.

Book Club
In the mood for a spooky read? The Burning Girls by C.J. Tudor has an eerie setting (a secretive village in rural England), but more than anything, it is an engaging mystery. The new vicar in town gets thrown into the role of amateur sleuth and investigates a cold case that has never stopped haunting the close-knit community.

Join our discussion live on Zoom on Wednesday, November 3rd from 6:30-7:30pm.

Can't make it this month? Our next book, which we'll chat about on Wednesday, December 1st, will be Bel Canto by Ann Patchett.

Support the Library this Holiday Season
The holiday season is fast approaching! No matter which holiday(s) you observe or how you celebrate them, here are some ways you can support the library while you're shopping for gifts or planning for holiday meals:

Amazon Store
Did you know the Aloha Community Library sells books online? If you're shopping for the readers in your life, browse or search through the thousands of titles listed on our Amazon store! From the popular to the obscure, we've got books on all kinds of topics.

Fred Meyer Community Rewards
Grocery shoppers can support the Aloha Community Library by registering for Fred Meyer's Community Rewards Program. Find us by name or by our non-profit number RE352.
AmazonSmile
If you shop online through Amazon, sign up for AmazonSmile and select the Aloha Community Library Association of Washington County as a beneficiary. 0.5% of qualifying purchases will be donated to the ACLA whenever you shop!
Introducing Teen Picks!
We love our Kid Picks program so much, we are expanding to add Teen Picks, too! Teens in grades 6-12 can submit their thoughts about books, games, TV shows, movies, and more here.

Our kid picks volunteers have done such a great job that they are starting to review books for publishers! If your child might want to join in the fun, please send Youth Services Librarian Katie an email.

#GivingTuesday
Created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good, #GivingTuesday has developed into a global generosity movement – and it's coming up on Tuesday, November 30th, right around the corner. The Aloha Community Library Association, as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, will be working to fundraise $10,000 on that date to benefit the library. We'll be spreading the word in the library, on our Facebook and Instagram, and through email, so stay tuned to learn how you can contribute!

Don't want to wait for a specific date to support the library? We gratefully accept donations all year long. Give online or visit the library to donate in person.

Together we give. Save the date: November 30, 2021. Giving Tuesday.
Moving Pictures
Explore a particular film with us – sometimes popular, sometimes obscure – in each monthly newsletter! The last few installments have focused on widely celebrated films with culturally significant ripple effects. This time we're spotlighting an under-seen gem: Short Term 12.

The movie follows the staff and residents of a short-term group home for children. Writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton worked in a similar facility before becoming a filmmaker.

His style allows comedy and tragedy to play off each other naturally, and although his authenticity can make the more emotional scenes especially affecting, this is one of the most hopeful movies in recent memory.

The film also boasts an incredible cast of actors before any of them hit the big time. Two of them, Brie Larson and Rami Malek, have since won Oscars for best lead performance (for Room and Bohemian Rhapsody, respectively). Visit Adult Services Librarian John's list of movies and TV shows featuring those involved with Short Term 12, as well as other modest movies that were incubators for unknown-at-the-time actors who would later shine in more visible work.

ENGINEER IT! Exploring Ancient Technologies
Build a shelter, design a boat, weave a basket, or invent a tool! Native Americans have long used science and engineering to develop tools, homes, clothing, cooking methods, and more – passing this knowledge down through generations. Many of these innovations are still being used today! Try out your own engineering skills while discovering technologies designed by Oregon's first engineers with take home kits provided by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History.

Kits will be available at the library starting Monday, November 15th during open hours while supplies last. View the accompanying video here.

Events & Programs
There's more going on at the library than just what we've got room for in this issue of our newsletter! Visit our online calendar to check out what we have scheduled this month for all ages.
