What's happening at YOUR library!
August 2021

Thank you, Aloha community!

Our neighbors are the best!

- Your overwhelming support of our auction and fundraising campaign in May and June helped us reach our goal to raise $15,000 for library operations!

- Community members continue to donate non-perishable food and hygiene supplies for the Aloha Church of God food pantry at a steady rate, helping our neighbors in need.

- And even with very restricted services and hours, you checked out 126,448 items from our location (including e-book check outs by patrons registered at ACL) from July 1, 2020 - June 30, 2021.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and continuing to visit the library! We are proud to serve you!

Moving Pictures

This is a new feature where, each month, we will take a deep dive into a particular film.  Whether it happens to be an old favorite or one you have never seen, we hope these fun facts, nifty tidbits, and relevant resources available through the library spark curiosity or prompt you to think “huh, that’s interesting.”

This month’s pick is Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window - starring Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and Raymond Burr.  The confinement, boredom, and obsessive thought patterns of the main character make this an excellent quarantine watch.  But the shifts in perspective and the formation of community that result from the story playing out also make it perfect for this period when we are cautiously emerging from isolation.

Intrigued? Visit Adult Services Librarian John's list of recommendations and wacky facts, including the original Rear Window shooting script, podcasts, and...Portuguese Water Dogs?

Kid Picks!

What is kid picks, you ask? We were inspired by a wonderful young community member to think of ways for kids to volunteer with the library, and we are very excited about this opportunity. We hope you are, too!

Announcing... Kid Picks! If you have a young person in your life who has enthusiasm for books, movies, TV shows, or games (video or otherwise), we want their opinions! Kids can submit reviews to be compiled into a newsletter, in-library displays, online lists, and more!

There are two ways for kids to submit their reviews: online or in the library. There are forms, pencils, and a drop box on the service desk in the *brand new* Children's Library.  If submitting a form online is easier, there is a google form at https://bit.ly/ACLkidpicks.

If the young person in your life is interested in being more involved with the behind-the-scenes aspects of Kid Picks (or if you have any questions), please send Youth Services Librarian Katie an email at katiep@alohalibrary.org.

Adult Summer Reading: Color Your World!

In the spirit of this year’s “Color Your World” Summer Reading theme, we’re asking you, our patrons, to tell us about the things that will forever color your recent memories. Each month, June through August, we’ll be sharing prompts through our social media channels, facebook.com/AlohaLibrary and on Instagram @AlohaCommunityLibrary, to spark community reflection and conversation about the recent books you read, movies & TV shows you watched, technology that increasingly became a part of your life, and the communities with which you’ve shared them. Be on the lookout for those prompts on Facebook and Instagram or send us your response as a reply to this newsletter if you’re not on social media!

For August, send us your text, video, or visual media response to the prompt, “The communities that will forever color my recent memories are                           .”

At the end of August, we’ll take all of the responses we gather and turn them into a collection of crowd-sourced recommendations and resources to be shared with our community. All respondents will also be entered into an end-of-Summer giveaway of fun prizes including WCCLS pint glasses, Aloha Community Library tote bags, and Baja Fresh gift baskets courtesy of our generous donors!
