5th Annual Author Fair Discover the talent that lies in our own backyard. Meet local authors from throughout the San Gabriel Valley, and then browse through their books. Books will be on display, available for sale and signing. Ghost Story Contest In the spirit of this year’s Young Readers League selection, The Key to Extraordinary by Natalie Lloyd, kids ages 8-14 are invited to enter this writing contest. In 300 words or less, tell a ghost story.

Dyslexia: Do you Know the Signs? October is National Dyslexia Awareness Month. People with dyslexia often have average to superior intelligence. Many are gifted in math, science, fine arts, journalism and other creative fields. Some famous examples include Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci and Winston Churchill. MATHMania Robotics Freeze Tag Soccer Starting with a controller, robotic brain and boxes full of structure pieces, young engineers will build a robot to meet the new challenge, Freeze Tag Soccer. Using a pattern, they will build a chassis with sensors. Their robot will need to gather points and avoid being tagged by other robots. During the second half of the event, they will rethink their design, modify and get creative. The event ends with a fun competition. Visual Futurist: The Art & Life of Syd Mead, Documentary Showing Directed by Joaquin Montalvan Enter the world of Syd Mead, legendary “Visual Futurist” behind such films as Blade Runner, TRON, Aliens, 2010, and experience his art as never before. Explore his life and career, from his early beginnings at Ford and designing consumer products for Philips, to his 747 interiors in the Middle East, to a yacht for Donald Trump. This feature-length documentary offers a compelling portrait of a man revered around the world, and a detailed look into the world of design, including some of his never-before-seen work. AUTHOR TALKS The Ghost of Walt Disney & Me Pasadena psychic Michael Kouri shares Walt Disney ghost sightings in his new book, The Ghost of Walt Disney & Me. He will also discuss the Haunted Queen Mary. The stories in his book are more eerie than scary, as they are real, according to Kouri. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Herb Freed: Renaissance Rabbi There are renaissance men, and then there’s the renaissance rabbi Herb Freed. A protégé of the great Dr. Abraham Joshua Heschel, Freed also was a theatrical director, filmmaker of 15 movies, author, screenwriter, student of dance legend Martha Graham, world traveler and for a brief 15 minutes of fame—GQ model. His new novel, Bashert, was inspired by his colorful life and his long love affair with his wife, the late Marion Segal Freed, who was an accomplished film editor and screenwriter and his partner in the movies and in life. It’s a rare mature love story with contemporary themes enlightened by Jewish spirituality and the examination of undying love. Books will be available for sale and signing. While difficult, with no jobs and a sight unseen apartment, the move turned out to be one of the most life-changing and humorous things that could have ever happened to them. The Necklace Author Claire McMillan’s second novel, The Necklace, is the intelligent, intoxicating story of long-simmering family resentments and a young woman who inherits a secret much more valuable than a legendary necklace. McMillan grew up in and around Pasadena. She practiced complex corporate litigation in San Francisco until 2003 and then received an MFA in creative writing from Bennington College. She currently lives on her husband’s family farm near Cleveland with their two children. Books will be available for sale and signing.
