Great news! Construction has begun.

On November 19, a failed water heater caused significant damage, requiring the closure of the entire lower level for water removal and extensive cleanup, including repairs to flooring and walls and the replacement of damaged furniture.
 
In the months since, we've worked through the insurance approval process, solicited bids from contractors, developed plans for improvements, and handled every item in the children's collection.
 
We look forward to welcoming you back to a refreshed and improved lower level when we reopen!

How Our Friends Are Helping
 
While insurance will cover the damage, generous support from the Friends of the Amherst Town Library is allowing us to do more than restore what was lost—we're using this opportunity to refresh and improve the entire lower level.
 
When we reopen, you'll find more accessible collections, expanded play and seating areas, improved lighting, upgraded audiovisual equipment, and more. We think it will be well worth the wait!

Three Major Goals for this Project

Restore and Repair
Restore existing services, repair damage caused from the water heater failure, and add safeguards to reduce future risk.
Improve Functionality
Improve the functionality and flexibility of the Children's Room and Johnson Meeting Room to better support current and future use. Address issues that existed before the damage (layout, acoustics, storage, technology).
Enhance Appearance
Creating welcoming, durable spaces that reflect the library's role as a community hub. Make fiscally responsible improvements that are attractive but not trendy, with long-term maintenance in mind.

Through the summer, we will continue to offer Children's collections, programs and services on the main floor of the library.
