Today is Library Giving Day!

Today is the day for all of us to show our love and support for libraries. Library Giving Day is an annual fundraising campaign designed to increase philanthropic support for libraries across the U.S. and Canada. Since its launch in 2019 by The Seattle Public Library Foundation, Library Giving Day has raised over $8 million, including $2 million in the past year alone.

Libraries serve as community cornerstones, providing essential services such as free access to books, technology, educational programs, and more. Library Giving Day enables individuals and businesses to contribute and ensure libraries continue to thrive.

This Library Giving Day, consider making a gift to support Shreve Memorial Library Foundation and its mission to support early literacy and lifelong learning initiatives through the Shreve Memorial Library. Shreve Memorial Library transforms Caddo Parish lives with resources, services, and support to create a better world, and with your support, the Foundation can help the library dream, discover, do... more!

Board Member Spotlight: Susan Erba
Susan Erba lives in Shreveport and is the mother of two incredible young men.  She moved to Shreveport in 1970 as her father was one of the original faculty members at the LSU Medical School in Shreveport.  She is an avid tennis player, captaining both her high school and college teams.  She left Shreveport to attend Hollins College, where she achieved Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude honors while majoring in statistics and then earned a master’s degree in biostatistics from VCU School of Medicine in Richmond, VA.   After college, she became an assistant professor in statistics and mathematics at Roanoke College before moving to Middleburg, VA, to teach and head the mathematics department at Foxcroft School for 27 years. While at Foxcroft, she was selected to be a member of the Professional Development Committee for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools, coached the tennis team, was awarded several grants, and received the Mary Louise Leipheimer Excellence in Teaching Award.  While at Foxcroft, she is most proud of co-organizing the K2m Competition, a middle school and high school STEM competition for girls in the Northern Virginia/Maryland area.  The competition allows students to work cooperatively in teams while solving real-life problems in a fun, non-threatening environment.

When her boys were young, she visited Shreveport with them to visit their grandparents. As soon as they arrived, her mother took them to the library to hear a reading of something fun, Rumpelstiltskin, which was acted out so well that her second son jumped into a stranger’s lap and started crying. He was so scared.  Her mother then had the boys each find five books they wanted to read while on vacation at her house, and they stood in line and checked the books out with their library cards.  These days at Shreve Memorial Library are impactful memories for her boys; one even became an English literature major in college.  Susan believes everyone needs to know how to read, a fundamental skill that shapes our lives.  It opens up new worlds full of different cultures and perspectives.  Without our libraries and books, we become an uneducated society.  The Foundation works on raising money to help us keep our libraries and their programs alive.

Susan is honored to be a member of the Library Foundation Board. She is a strong advocate for the library and its resources. One of her greatest passions is to help with childhood poverty; she believes getting an education is the best way out of poverty.  She believes every individual has a right to a solid education and every child should have an opportunity to learn and build up their confidence in what they can do. Shreve Memorial Library provides so many opportunities and support services for young people. They offer story time and STEAM activities for preschoolers, coding classes and other fun classes for teens.
