I just read the Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn and really enjoyed it! Veronica and her colleague Stoker are a scientist and natural historian who work together to solve mysteries in late 1880s England. I particularly liked the characterization of Veronica as a fierce, deeply intelligent lady scientist and detective (not very usual for the time period!) and the growth of the relationship between her and Stoker. There are currently five books in the series; start with A Curious Beginning, in which Veronica and Stoker meet, are thrown into detective work after the murder of a mutual friend, and soon find themselves fearing for their lives (a not uncommon occurrence for them, as it turns out...) Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction, mysteries, and a bit of romance. -Stephanie
