New Books
Book cover for "Flashlight" by Susan Choi. A young girl stands alone on a moonlit beach, waves lapping at her feet. She holds a flashlight that casts a narrow beam across the dark sand. The title "Flashlight" appears in bold, glowing letters above her, with the author’s name in smaller font below. The scene evokes mystery, memory, and loss.
Flashlight : A Novel
by Susan Choi
Choi's follow-up to Trust Exercises proves she's a writer at the top of her game, capable of crafting a well-plotted and complex story while remaining attuned to small internal motivations, along with intersectional and cultural liminalities, those edges between surf and sand where so much violence happens, as much to bodies as to hearts, minds, and homes.--Emily Bowles

Book cover for "Matisse in Morocco" by Jeff Koehler. Features a vivid reproduction of Henri Matisse’s painting "Window at Tangier," with bold colors and geometric patterns. The title appears in elegant serif font across the top, with the subtitle “A Journey of Light and Color” below. The author’s name is displayed prominently, and the overall design evokes the warmth and vibrancy of Moroccan light and landscape.
Matisse in Morocco : A Journey of Light and Color
by Jeff Koehler

Through Koehler's research and travel, we experience Matisse's time in Tangier, the paintings and their subjects, his relationships with his wife Amélie and his two important collectors, and then come to understand the impact Morocco--its light, colors, culture, and artistic traditions--had on his art. From Landscape Viewed From a Window, to Zorah on the Terrace, from Kasbah Gate to the dream-like tableau Moroccan Café, these works from Morocco are now recognized as some of the most significant and dazzling of Matisse's illustrious career.
Book cover for "Awake in the Floating City" by Susanna Kwan. Depicts a partially submerged San Francisco skyline under a stormy sky, with buildings rising from floodwaters. A lone figure stands on a rooftop, gazing out over the water. The title appears in luminous, drifting font across the top, evoking a dreamlike, post-apocalyptic mood.
Awake in the floating city : a novel
by Susanna Kwan

Kwan's work is a meditation on grief and loss, both of loved ones and of home, as well as on the purpose of art in the darkest of times.

VERDICT Quiet but powerful, this debut will stay with readers. Recommended, especially as a suggestion for book clubs.--Jennifer Renken
Book cover for "Welcome to Murder Week" by Karen Dukess. Features a quaint English village nestled in rolling green hills under a cloudy sky. A red suitcase sits abandoned on a cobblestone path, hinting at travel and mystery. The title appears in playful, bold lettering, with a subtle bloodstain motif, while the author’s name is displayed in smaller font below.
Welcome to Murder Week : A Novel
by Karen Dukess

An American woman travels to the English countryside when she discovers tickets her late mother had purchased for a murder mystery simulation in a small British town.

This charming and heartfelt cozy from Dukess (The Last Book Party) is just the thing for a rainy afternoon and a cup of tea. The dialogue is snappy, the characters are endearing, and the plot is satisfyingly quirky.--Susan Clifford Braun
Book cover for "This Dog Will Change Your Life" by Elias Weiss Friedman. Features a close-up portrait of a soulful-eyed dog against a soft, blurred background. The title is displayed in bold, friendly lettering across the top, with the author’s name below. The design is warm and inviting, reflecting the emotional and uplifting tone of the book.
This Dog Will Change Your Life
by Elias Weiss Friedman

This book weaves together stories of the many dogs Elias has been lucky enough to know, both in his personal life and while doing his Dogist work. Told in a light tone that does not shy away from more serious issues, this book charmingly explores the ways that dogs are not just our family and our friends but also irreplaceable beings capable of generating boundless love and restoring balance to our lives. In an increasingly alienating and divisive world, there is one clear remedy: the one with four legs that rolls over for belly rubs. Dogs can change our lives, and this book might just change yours.
