Dighton Public Library
April 2026
Spring is finally here, and the Library has a lot to offer in April. Local author and historian Mary Malloy will be giving a talk on April 2nd about the 19th century China trade that brought tea, porcelain, and other goods to the early United States. For those looking for a creative outlet, local author and novelist J.W. Elliot returns to Dighton on Saturday April 11th for another creative writing workshop. The Library will also be hosting needlework night on April 2nd, a plant pot painting workshop on April 9th, Scrabble Day on April 13th, tie-dye night on April 16th, and Cooking Club on April 16th. Another community yoga series will start on April 30th and run until June 4th, so call the Library to register if you are interested in participating in these sessions. We have plenty of activities planned for April Vacation, including a laser maze challenge on April 21st, game day on April 22nd, an escape room on April 23rd, a matinee movie showing of Elio on April 24th, and a caricature artist on April 25th. Ecologist and author Brad Timm will be giving a talk on April 23rd on his new book and America's wildlife. Speaking of wildlife, our wildlife photography contest starts in May, so submit your photos by May 1st to enter. Don't forget to check our calendar to see everything else coming up in April. Please note that the Library will be closed on Monday April 20th for Patriots' Day.

April Programs
The Impact of the New England China Trade: 1800 - 1850
Join local author and historian Mary Malloy on Thursday April 2nd at 6:00 in the Program Room and learn about the trade, the participants, and the products that documented the encounters between Yankee sailors and their trading partners across the Pacific. As soon as the Revolutionary War ended, the first American ships were off in search of tea, silks, and porcelain in China. Early Americans relied on trading resources they could assemble on the voyage, including sandalwood, sea otter pelts, and seal skins and traded with Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Islands and the west coast of North America during their voyages. This program is free to attend, and no registration is required.
Creative Writing Workshop: Building Fantasy Worlds
Join local novelist J.W. Elliot on Saturday April 11th at 11:00 in the Program Room and learn how to use the real world as the basis for innovative and original fantasy worlds. This workshop will define science fiction and fantasy, explain what makes for bestselling fiction, and discuss the basic principles of effective world building. The workshop will conclude with an interactive writing session demonstrating techniques to introduce your world to your readers through exposition, dialogue, and character development. This program is free to attend, and no registration is required.
Public Information Session: Debt Exclusion Discussion
Do you have questions about the upcoming debt exclusion? Then stop by the Reading Room to chat with Town Administrator Ralph Vitacco on Thursday April 2nd any time between 6:00 and 8:00. Ralph will answer any questions about the purpose, impact, and long-term implications of the proposed measure, including what a "yes" vote means, what a "no" vote means, and how each outcome may impact Dighton. This session is free to attend and no registration is required.
Plant Pot Painting
If you would like to express your unique personality on a plant pot or simply want to bring some color into your plant nursery, then join us on April 9th at 6:00 in the Program Room to paint your very own 4 inch pot.
