This month we'll be reading The Awakening. On vacation in Grand Isle, Louisiana in the summer of 1899, Edna Pontellier realizes that she is unhappy in her life as a wife and mother. She begins to explore her longing for independence and creative fulfillment but soon realizes that she cannot awaken fully from the restraints and conventions placed upon her by society. We'll also start distributing copies of our May title, Faithful. 2 p.m., JCCL This month we're reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. No one's ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine, but everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from their lives of isolation. We'll also start distributing copies of May's title, The Leavers. 7 p.m., WL William & Mary senior Zach Meredith will present his research on the history of the Williamsburg Redevelopment & Housing Authority (WRHA). The WRHA has overseen projects such as the development of Crispus Attucks Place, Strawberry Plains, and the redevelopment of the Triangle Block. While focusing on the history of the WRHA, this presentation will also contextualize how the broader history of race and class have shaped the development of the Williamsburg area over time. 2 p.m., SC Judy Garland headlines this joyous musical slice of Americana celebrating the restaurants that brought civilization to Old West rail passengers. 2 p.m., WL Theatre This month participants can read any True Crime story they'd like, and share the title with others in the group. If you'd like to browse the library's True Crime collection, the typical style is found in the 364.1523 area. We'll also be passing out copies of Rocket Men, the group's read for May. 2 p.m., SC In this true story, Veronica Guerin (Cate Blanchett) is an investigative reporter for an Irish newspaper. As the drug trade begins to bleed into the mainstream, Guerin decides to take on and expose those responsible. 7 p.m., WL Theatre Share conversation, experiences, and memories in WRL's program for adults with early memory loss and their care partners. This month's theme is "Strikes and Spares: Let's Go Bowling!" We'll meet at AMF Williamsburg Lanes and begin our afternoon with a short talk, then bowl a few frames.
