Why you might like it: No retiring wallflower, Ella is a smart, brave heroine who goes on quite an adventure in her quest to protect herself, and perhaps the prince, who just happens to be her childhood friend.

What it's about: Minli's father is a wonderful storyteller, but her family is very poor. So she decides to go on a journey in search of the Old Man of the Moon, in hopes of changing her family's fortune and bringing life to Fruitless Mountain.
Why you might like it: Lin steeps the story in Chinese folklore to create a wonderful adventure starring a brave, likable heroine, not to mention a talking goldfish and a flightless dragon!

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky

Introducing: Tristan Strong, a seventh grader from Chicago. His Dad and Grandad want him to be a boxer, but he just lost his first big fight and is being reluctantly sent off to spend the summer on his grandparents' farm in Alabama.
What it's about: The night he arrives in Alabama, he finds himself confronting a character straight out of his Nana's stories. Before he knows it, he has accidentally fallen through a hole he punched in the sky, tumbled into a place called the MidPass and is on an adventure with allies including John Henry and Brer Rabbit.
Who it's for: Fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and Magnus Chase books will find a similar feel here, starring a modern boy thrown into a mythical world, in this case one of African American folklore and legend.
