September is Library Card Sign Up month. If you're getting this newsletter, there's a good chance you already have a Library Card. What has flown unintentionally under the radar, like many things in the pandemic, is that in March of 2021 the San Leandro City Council approved elimination of the non-resident fee card. By doing so we became the last library in California to convert to allowing anyone in California to get a library card, not just city residents. Making that change has opened up statewide resources including grant funded programming and free access to online tools that we can make available for our patrons. The library has 18 online homework, research, or learning tools. Did you know the average cost for someone to subscribe to LinkedIn Learning is about $500/year? The library provides this amazing, professional online class resource with hundreds of thousands of topics taught by masters of their craft, for free to library uses. Visit our website and follows the steps. All you need is your library card. Another unintentional under the radar fact is that a library card not only allows you to check out books, DVDs, CDs, and other physical items and get on a library computer, it allows you to check out a laptop, Chromebook, and/or hotspot as well as telescopes, sewing machines, and about 45 other implements, tools, and pieces of equipment from our Library of Things. Not only that, it allows you to check out e-books, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines right to your phone or device. All free of charge. So, while it's likely most of you have a library card, I bet you didn't know it provided access to so many other resources besides checking out physical books. For those of you who have a library card and know the value it brings your life, I encourage you to let others know about the resources that are unlocked with a library card. Now when they say, "Oh, I'm not a reader," or "Aren't libraries outdated and going away?" you can let them know the unique and sometimes unexpected things you can get access to with a San Leandro Public Library card. -Brian Simons
