Love & gelato
by Jenna Evans Welch
****(4 stars) Review by an East Bay Teen
In order to fulfill her mother’s dying wish, Lina flies out to Italy for the summer to spend time with her father, who has been an absent figure for her entire life. Touching down in Italy, she realizes that Howard, her father that she refuses to accept, lives in a graveyard which isn’t the ideal place for someone coping from her mother’s death. Soon after her arrival, she is handed her mother’s old journal. One that she has never seen before, considering that her mother was fairly open about her writing. With the guidance of the journal and a boy that she has conflicted feelings for, she navigates throughout Italy through her mother’s eyes in hopes to understand a piece of her mother’s life that she never knew about while piecing together the reasons as to why she never met her father. This story was wonderfully laced with hope, wittiness, and a light-hearted feeling. The snippets of her mother’s journal filled the plot with many twists and turns as I followed alongside her, trying to unravel the mystery of Lina mother’s college days. Although, the storyline was mostly filled with the untangling of the journal and less about the love aspect in Lina’s life. I loved how the story was written to be cute and funny, while at times I felt the devastating moments that Lina faces. Overall, Love and Gelato is perfect for anyone who is looking for a contemporary teen romance novel that’s both addicting and a quick read.
