Summer Reading 2026: Unearth a Story
Thursday, June 25 - Saturday, August 8
 
All ages are invited to "dig up" books this summer by participating in our Summer Reading Challenge. Youth participants must read at least 16 books to complete the challenge. Adults and teens must read at least 6 books. Any book counts! Log the books you read to earn badges and rewards. Our community reading goal is to read 12,500 books by August 8. Help us out and read as much as you can! To sign up and learn more, go to yorkcounty.beanstack.org. 
Library Closures
 
Tabb and Yorktown Libraries will be closed on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4 for Independence Day. Our digital collection is always available, though, so visit our online resources through our website or through OverDrive. See our full list of upcoming closures on our Closing & Holidays web page.

Art Roulette
Tuesday, July 7, 6:15-7:30 p.m.
Tabb Library Meeting Room
 
Art enthusiasts unite! During this fun, fast-paced program, we will be creating collaborative masterpieces. How does it work, you may ask? Everyone starts with a blank canvas and a prompt. Then you paint! After five minutes, you'll pass your canvas to the next artist. This process repeats until everyone gets their original canvas- and new work of art- back.
 Registration is required as space and supplies are limited.

The Floating Folk Jam Yorktown
Wednesday, July 8, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Yorktown Library Meeting Room
 
The Floating Folk Jam visits the Yorktown Library on the second Wednesday of every other month. The "Folk Jam” is a fun, free event where attendees go around the circle picking songs to sing and play together. Lead a song, request a song or pick from the big song book.  If you have an unplugged instrument, please bring it with you. Singing/instrument playing is not required: listeners are also welcome. For Adults and Teens Accompanied by Adults.
 
Trivia Night: Revolutionary War

Happy 250th, America! Celebrate with revolutionary trivia at Yorktown. This special session's categories include Founding Figures, Virginia Revolution, A New Government, The Revolution in Media, and more! Snacks will be provided. A Local Author Event

Join us for two brief presentations by local authors Patti Procopi and Ruthann E Gray Grabowski who have written books set during the colonial and Revolutionary War periods. They’ll talk a bit about their work, what drew them to this point in history, and what it’s like writing stories set in early America. There will be time for questions, conversation, and a chance to meet the authors and check out their books. If you enjoy historical fiction, children's books, or are just curious about local writing, you'll want to attend this program! Registration is suggested, but not required.

Cricut DIY Vinyl Stickers

Ready to DIY your own Vinyl Stickers? Come join us to learn how to make vinyl stickers with the Cricut that are perfect for your laptop, phone, water bottle, or as a gift. This craft program will involve using Design Space software and Cricut machine use; prior experience will help but is not required. Depending on time, participants may leave with stickers, or they may need to pick their stickers up at a later date. This program is for adults; registration is required as space is limited. This program requires a minimum dexterity/mobility requirement and requires the ability to work independently.

Join us for a Glowforge for Beginners session at the Yorktown library to learn laser cutting basics, including how laser cutters work, safety basics, and how to design files using Canva. Participants will design a keychain to be printed and picked up at a later date. This program is free for adults. Registration is required as space is limited. Notes: Participants will need a free Canva account to design their files. This is a Makerspace program, not a craft/art program.

'Bad' Art Night: Acrylic Paint

Blow off some steam and get creative at our "Bad" Art Night. If you work better with constraints, an art prompt will be provided. No pressure to finish- take this time to relax and unwind. Talent and skill will not be judged, but works may show up on library social media.

Watercolors & Salt

Join us at the Yorktown Library to learn a fun abstract watercolor technique. This month, we will explore wet on wet and color washing while observing the effect of salt on watercolor. This casual paint night is perfect for anyone looking to practice meditative art techniques and create in a low-pressure environment. Registration is required. All materials are provided. For adults 18+ This program is best suited to beginners.

Family Tree Shadowbox
Thursday, July 23, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Create an 8"x8" family tree themed shadowbox using Cricut precut paper layers. This is a great decoration for your (or a loved one’s) office or home. All supplies are included. This program is for adults only; registration is required. This craft requires a moderate level of manual dexterity level due to working with the delicate paper layers. Note: Design colors may vary due to paper.

Jigsaw Puzzle Swap
Saturday, July 25, 10-11:15 a.m.

You asked for it and we delivered- puzzle swap time! Puzzles may be brought to the Tabb library Reference department. Donated puzzles must be in the original box, contain all pieces, be from the last 10-25 years, and not show excessive signs of wear or age. Puzzlebug and other dollar store brands will not be accepted. Anyone is welcome to donate more than six; however, attendees can only receive a maximum of six at the event. Donations will be accepted at the Tabb Library Reference desk from July 5 to 24.

Titanic: Fate and Fortune

Built of iron and designed for unsurpassed luxury and comfort, the RMS Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage in April 1912. Yet she was not able to complete that first trip. Join The Mariners’ Museum and Park as we examine the facts and fiction surrounding this remarkable vessel and the disaster that brought about her final end. As told through the stories and images of some of her passengers and crew, we will take a glimpse at how three classes of passengers traveled on the once mighty ship, and how this famous maritime disaster helped bring about the changes that still affect modern day safety at sea. Registration is requested for planning/staff purposes.

Join us at the library for a lively evening of Wii Bowling, where all the tossing is done by Wiimote. No heavy bowling balls or special shoes required! Whether you're a seasoned player or trying it out for the first time, this interactive game is easy to learn and fun for all skill levels. 
You can register with a friend or come solo and meet new people along the way. Bring your game face, your best bowling moves, and plenty of enthusiasm as you cheer each other on. It’s the perfect chance to connect, have fun, and maybe even score a strike or two!

For those who love minis and model-making: come to our hobbyist Build Night at the library! Bring your work-in-progress or a new project while sharing tips, techniques, and inspiration with fellow enthusiasts. All skill levels are welcome. Projects and kits are not provided. There will be acrylic paint and paintbrushes available as well as a small assortment of tools. Registration, though not required, is helpful for staff planning.

In this short genealogy introduction led by library staff, you will identify personal areas of genealogical interest, craft research questions, and discover helpful genealogy resources. Can you be the fastest team? Let's puzzle it out together! Teams of four compete to put together a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle in two hours or less. 
The team captain should register for the event- make sure to indicate your teammates in the Special Notes field. Please do not sign up if you have not put together a team. The puzzle competition is for Adults and Teens aged 11 and up. Each team is allowed to keep their puzzle.

The British are coming! Help the patriot cause during our Summer Reading finale by finding clues and solving puzzles before time runs out. Register your team of 3-7 friends. Disclaimer: Please arrive promptly at your scheduled time. Late arrivals past 5 minutes will have their session registration cancelled. This is the same escape room that took place in April.
