Mindful Coloring & Doodling

Tabb Library Meeting Room
 
Take a break--you've earned it! Let the outside world melt away as you relax while coloring or doodling. This is a program for adults 18 and up. Whether you're a trained artist, drawing enthusiasts, compulsive doodler, or seeker of new hobbies, there's a seat for you at our table. Abstract Watercolors Series

Join us at the Yorktown Library to learn a new abstract watercolor technique. This month we will work on brush control by painting watercolor box shapes. This casual paint night is perfect for anyone looking to practice meditative art techniques and create in a low-pressure environment. All materials are provided. Beekeeping is a wonderful way to bring the magic of nature into your own yard and to help provide habitat to key pollinators.  But what is really involved with becoming a beekeeper?  How much does it cost, what do you need to know, and what are the first steps that you should take to get started?  Come and join us to learn more about it from the York/Poquoson Master Gardeners, and to see if beekeeping might be right for you. Registration recommended. The Floating Folk Jam Yorktown

The Floating Folk Jam Yorktown visits the Yorktown Library, 6-8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every other month. The "Folk Jam” is a fun, free event where attendees go around the circle picking songs to sing and play together. Lead a song, request a song or pick from the big song book. If you have an unplugged instrument, please bring it with you. Singing/instrument playing is not required: listeners are also welcome. For adults and teens accompanied by adults.
 
Wool Felting for Beginners
Thursday, March 12, 6-8 p.m.
Tabb Library Program Room
 
In this beginner-level wool needle felting class, we’ll create a shamrock pin. Your finished project is prefect for St. Patrick's Day.
Note: There is a high level of dexterity required specifically for use of the sharp needles. 
All supplies will be provided, including safety coverings for your fingers. We will be using wool in this class, so keep that in mind if you are sensitive or allergic to wool. Attendance at prior wool felting class is not necessary to attend this program. Registration is required as space and materials are limited.
 
Ancestry Library Edition Tutorial

Join us for a hands-on tutorial of Ancestry Library Edition! Learn about this valuable free resource for genealogy you can access at the library. Try your hand at a records search, and discover other ways this site can help with your family history research. C.R.A.S.E. Training

Join Deputy Kevin Taylor, Crime Prevention Specialist and Law Enforcement Practitioner for York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office for an informative presentation on CRASE (Citizens Response to Active Shooter Events).  Deputy Taylor will provide education on active aggressor events and how citizens should respond to them should you be caught in the middle of one.  In this class citizens will learn how to apply the Avoid, Deny, Defend concept. Questions are encouraged both during and after the presentation. Registration encouraged but not required.

Artists and crafters are invited to clean out their closets to trade for new-to-you supplies during our Community Arts and Crafts Supplies Swap.
To ensure all can benefit, we will have a two-bag take-home limit per adult - both bags should be an average sized cloth tote bag or the size of a Trader Joe's paper bag. Exciting Note: York County Public School District, Newport News Public School District, Gloucester County Public School District, Poquoson City School District, and Hampton City School District teachers who present their work ID at the entrance will be admitted 15 minutes before the official start time. Join Sarah Raiford from the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown as she shares her knowledge on uses of herbs in the 18th century! Sarah will walk you through some of the more common herbal remedies used during the Revolutionary War and how families grew plants in their own garden and used them to treat ailments at home. Join us for a special Poetry Open Mic. Sign up for a 3-5 minute time slot to guarantee your chance to read. There will be a very limited amount of drop-in sign up slots. You can bring an original poem or a poem from one of your favorite poets. Please practice your reading in advance as we will be firm on the 5 minute time limit. This event is intended for adults.
