Mosquitoes are part of life in the Tidewater area, but that doesn’t mean that you have to avoid using your yard because of them.  There are many companies out there promising solutions, but are their methods scientifically proven?  Join a Virginia Master Naturalist to find out how to successfully control mosquitoes in your yard using techniques backed up by scientific research. Take a break--you've earned it! Let the outside world melt away as you relax while coloring or doodling. This is a program for adults 18 and up. Whether you're a trained artist, drawing enthusiast, compulsive doodler, or seeker of new hobbies, there's a seat for you at our table. Floating Folk Jam

The Floating Folk Jam Yorktown visits the Yorktown Library, 6-8 pm on the second Wednesday of every other month. The "Folk Jam” is a fun, free event where attendees go around the circle picking songs to sing and play together. Lead a song, request a song or pick from the big song book. If you have an unplugged instrument, please bring it with you. Singing/instrument playing is not required: listeners are also welcome. Glowforge for Beginners

Join us for a Glowforge for Beginners session at the Yorktown library to learn laser cutting basics, including how laser cutters work, safety basics, and how to design files using Canva. Participants will design a leather bookmark to be printed and picked up at a later date. This program is free for adults. Registration is required as space is limited. Note: Participants will need a free Canva account to design their files. Common Sense: The Virginia Declaration of Rights

Join us for an exploration of the writings of Thomas Paine and the composing of the Virginia Declaration of Rights in 1776. Thomas Paine wrote, "The cause of America is in a great measure the cause of all mankind. Many circumstances have, and will arise, which are not local, but universal." This inspiring participatory event engages the audience with music and living history as it offers a unique picture into the elements of our shared colonial history. Presented by 1781 Foundation, Shapes of Our Past, and VA250. Registration encouraged.

Plant Propagation Party

Gardening enthusiast? Interested in plant propagation? Attend our plant propagation event to learn the basics of propagation, including plant parts, where to cut for optimal success, propagation tips for soil and water, and general care for their propagated plant. We will be propagating easy to care for plants from the library, specifically pothos and philodendron. There will be water and canned beverages for the party portion. Cheers! Registration is required. Participants who bring one or two clean, glass jars may take small cuttings home.

Colonial Dance Instruction

Come all of you Macaronis and join us for a rollicking afternoon of family-friendly colonial fun. Mind the music, learn a few new dance steps from our friends with the Virginia Youth Regiment. They will be handy to know for the big events with the upcoming 250th anniversary celebrations. This program is sponsored by Virginia Youth Regiment, York County Arts Commission, and the Yorktown Commemoration Committee. Registration is required.

Miniatures and Models Build Night

For those who love miniatures and model-making: come to our first hobbyist Build Night at the library! Bring your work-in-progress or a new project to start while sharing tips, techniques, and inspiration with fellow enthusiasts. All skill levels are welcome, from beginners to seasoned hobbyist. Projects and kits are not provided; please bring your own. Note: There will be acrylic paint and paintbrushes available for use as well as a small assortment of tools. Free to attend- primarily for adults and teens accompanied by an adult. Registration, though not required, is helpful for staff planning.

AI for Seniors
Saturday, May 30, 2:00-3:30 p.m.
Tabb Library Technology Room
 
AI for Seniors is a hands-on class designed to introduce older adults to artificial intelligence in a simple yet safe way. Participants will learn how to use AI to assist them in their completion of everyday tasks such as writing emails, finding recipes, or simply asking questions. The program will also cover important topics like online safety and recognizing scams. Scout volunteers will provide one-on-one assistance throughout the class to ensure everyone can follow along at their own pace. By the end of the class, attendees will feel more confident using AI and have skills they can continue using at home. This program is being held as a part of an Eagle Scout candidate project for BSA Troop 54 in Yorktown. Registration is required.

Have you ever wondered how to harvest the fragrance of a flower? Are you curious how to capture the irresistible aroma of sandalwood? Wouldn’t you love to witness see how people in past times extracted, preserved and blended botanicals for cosmetic purposes? Then join us! 
In this engaging presentation by Rebecca Suerdieck of Perrin Cottage Perfumery, all attendees will gain an appreciation of the art and science of perfume making. Learn why this was done for culinary, medicinal and cosmetic uses, and experience a forgotten trade that was done in early Virginia. Attendees will also get to enjoy a scent sampling of popular botanicals and blends that have endured the test of time.

Paint Night Fundraiser

Join us for an evening of creativity and relaxation at the Friends of the York County Library Paint Night! This adults-only event is perfect for painters of all skill levels. Unwind as you follow guided instructions to create your own masterpiece. Tickets are required to attend this event. Cost is $40 per ticket and includes all supplies as well as an optional glass of wine for adults 21 and older (ID required). Additional glasses of wine will be available to purchase. All proceeds support the Friends of the York County Library and their mission to enhance library programs and services. Spaces are limited, so register to be sent a link to buy your ticket.
