All ages are invited to "dig up" books this summer by participating in our Summer Reading Challenge. Youth participants must read at least 16 books to complete the challenge. Adult and teen participants must read at least 6 books to complete the challenge. Any book counts!
Log the books you read to earn badges and rewards. Our community reading goal is to read 12,500 books by or before August 8. Help us out and read as much as you can!
How to Sign Up for the Reading Challenge
Starting June 25, go to yorkcounty.beanstack.org. Log in using your previously-created log-in information, or create a new account. If the site does not auto-enroll you in the challenge, look under Current Challenges to register. Then you can start logging your reading. If you need help, stop by the Youth Services or Reference desks at both libraries during our normal operating hours.
Adventure all summer long
This summer will feature a variety of activities for all ages. Children and teens can look forward to story times, crafts, science, gaming, and much more! Adults will have exciting programs such as a jigsaw puzzle swap, art roulette, trivia, and more!
Dinosaur Stories
July 1-31
Ages 5-8, 9-12, 13-17
Our summer reading theme is about unearthing a story. We are asking for story submissions this summer. Do you want to write a story about the discovery of dinosaurs, a dinosaur who lives on the moon, or a miniature pet dinosaur that is the size of a dog? Let your imagination run wild!
These submissions will be judged within age groups: ages 5-8, 9-12, 13-17. Guidelines will be available on July 1st. Winners will be chosen and will receive a prize.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office is proud to offer the EZ Child ID Digital Fingerprinting System, a comprehensive service that captures your child's fingerprints, photo, medical information, and a short video. Parents will receive a printout of the fingerprints along with a flash drive containing all recorded information. Rest assured, this sensitive data is never stored and is immediately deleted from the computer once the flash drive is provided. Crime Prevention Specialist Kevin Taylor and Deputy First Class Trey Ulintz from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office will be on site assisting families during the event, and McGruff the Crime Dog will also be there to meet children and help promote safety awareness. Each child’s session lasts approximately 10 minutes. To reserve a spot, please sign up each child individually. Upon arrival, parents should sign in, and children will be taken in the order they arrive. For questions about the Child ID program or event details, please contact Crime Prevention Specialist Kevin Taylor at 757-890-3639 or Deputy First Class Trey Ulintz at 757-890-3677.
Dinorific Scientific Name Game
Saturday, June 27
2:00-3:00 pm
Tabb
Join children’s author “Mr. Mike” Sgrignoli for an interactive game show - 270 million years in the making! Contestants are challenged to tell the difference between a REAL dinosaur name and one that Mr. Mike made up. The DINORIFIC SCIENTIFIC NAME GAME features fun dino facts and original dino music! Like the theme song says, it’s “so easy to play…yet so hard to win!”
Mr. Mike also relates lesser known facts about the ancient creatures everyone already knows and introduces fascinating beasts that rarely take center stage. It's an open-ended conversation with the audience as Mr. Mike leads you through 270 million years of dinosaur history! Be careful...you might learn something!
Registration is not required.
Dinosaur Exhibit Take & Make
June 29-July 15
Ages 4 - High School
We want to create a mini dinosaur exhibit and we need your help. Come pick up a kit from the Tabb library to create a clay dinosaur. You will name it and you will tell us what kind of dinosaur it is (either factual or fictional). Return your completed dinosaur to the Tabb library and it will be displayed in our lobby. After our summer reading program comes to an end, we will return your dinosaur creations back to you. *while supplies last.
Come enjoy a special story time with Crime Prevention Specialist Kevin Taylor from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office as he shares some of his favorite stories with preschoolers and their families. Special guest McGruff the Crime Dog will also be visiting the library to help share important safety messages with children in a fun and engaging way. For questions about Deputy Story Time, please contact Crime Prevention Specialist Kevin Taylor at 757-890-3639.
