October 2025 Newsletter
“I'm not, like, a book guy, but isn't the point of all this book stuff like what Ms. Croft was teaching us—that unrestricted access to books allows us to be challenged and changed? To learn new things and to critically think about those things and not be afraid of them? To be better than we were before we read them?” ―David Connis, Suggested Reading

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE HOLBROOK PUBLIC LIBRARY
Thank you, Nancy!
The Friends of the Holbrook Public Library held their annual meeting recently to update the members on all of the accomplishments over the past year and to hold elections for the Board leadership.  Their long time leader, Nancy Warner, announced that she was going to step down from her role as Co-President.  Nancy's leadership, dedication, and passion for supporting the Holbrook Public Library was inspiring and will be greatly missed.  They are thankful for Nancy's willingness to remain a member of the Friends group and to continue her support of the organization.

If you were inspired by Nancy's leadership and love of the Holbrook Public Library and are looking for ways to continue her work, the Friends are hoping to expand their group's membership.  You can learn more about the Friends by visiting the library webpage or the Friends' Facebook page!
NEWS FROM THE HOLBROOK PUBLIC LIBRARY                                  FOUNDATION
3rd Annual Mini Golf at the Library

The Holbrook Public Library Foundation would like to thank everyone that came to their 3rd annual Mini Golf at the Library Fundraiser!  There were over 500 people that came by, played a round, and enjoyed some treats from the food trucks.  It was an amazing night!

They would also like to thank all of the generous sponsors of the event.  Holbrook local businesses always turn out to support the community!  Their sponsorships help to support ongoing efforts to improve the library building and resources.

If you are interested in learning more about the Foundation, please visit the library website.  They are welcoming new members!
                           NEWS FROM  "VOICES & VOTES"

(Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition Examining Democracy in America
Coming to Holbrook!

The Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street, in cooperation with MassHumanities, and the Holbrook Public Library, presents “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America.” The exhibition examines the nearly 250-year-old American experiment of a government “of, by and for the people,” and how each generation since continues to question how to form “a more perfect union.”

Holbrook Public Library and the surrounding community has been chosen by MassHumanities to host “Voices and Votes” as part of the Museum on Main Street program—a national/state/local partnership to bring exhibitions and programs to rural cultural organizations. The exhibition is only touring 6 communities in Massachusetts.

“Voices and Votes” explores the action, reaction, vision and revision that democracy demands as Americans continue to question how to shape the country. From the revolution and suffrage, to civil rights and casting ballots, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story—the story of democracy in America.

Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the struggles to obtain and keep the vote, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. “Voices and Votes” features historical and contemporary photos; educational and archival video; engaging multimedia interactives with short games; and historical objects like campaign souvenirs, voter memorabilia, and protest material.

“‘Voice and Votes’ allows us to reflect on Holbrook's history and explore what it means to be an active participant in the governance of not only the country but also this community,” said Patty Conway, Project Director. “We want to convene conversations about and have developed local exhibitions and public programs to complement the Smithsonian exhibition.” Such free events include Holbrook's First Animal Ambassador Election, a Veterans' Day brunch honoring Holbrook's veterans and the female veterans being inducted into the Holbrook Hall of Fame, a Community Art Project, Weekly Coffee & Community hours, Holidays in Holbrook, and many more programs to be announced..

Opening at the Maple on Franklin building (120 North Franklin Street) on November 1, 2025, “Voices and Votes” will be open  through Saturday December 13, 2025.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the exhibit, please contact Patty at pconway@holbrook.ocln.org or visit the SignUp Genius page to volunteer. ( https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C054AAFAE29A4FDCF8-58561875-voices)

FALL CLEAN-UP

We had a great first day for our Fall Clean-up!  Hostas were transplanted, invasive vines were eradicated, and so many irises were harvested to allow them to go home with some lucky library users and gardeners!  Thank you to Kate, Gina, and our library volunteer, Mary!

We are planning an additional day or two to do some more clean up of the library lawns to prepare them for winter and to establish some extra space for expanded our community gardens next spring. If you would like to get involved, please reach out to Gina at gcullen@holbrook.ocln.org
