"In fifty-four short chapters, Williams recounts memories of her mother, ponders her own faith, and contemplates the notion of absence and presence art and in our world. When Women Were Birds is a carefully crafted kaleidoscope that keeps turning around the question: What does it mean to have a voice?"

FPL Fiction Book Club Tuesday, November 18th, 4pm-5pmBay Meeting Room
Welcome to the library's longest-running book club! We read a combination of classics, older literary fiction and newer titles! We look forward to seeing you. You can pick up a library copy of the book at the Adult Services or Circulation desks. This beloved 1937 classic is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. It is the story of fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. A true literary wonder, Hurston's masterwork remains as relevant and affecting today as when it was first published—perhaps the most widely read and highly regarded novel in the entire canon of African American literature (1937).

This month's book is Isola by Allegra Goodman. Heir to a fortune, Marguerite is destined for a life of prosperity and gentility. Then she is orphaned, and her guardian spends her inheritance and insists she accompany him on an expedition to New France. Isolated and afraid, Marguerite befriends her guardian's servant and the two develop an intense attraction. But when their relationship is discovered, they are brutally punished and abandoned on a small island with no hope for rescue. Once a child of privilege who dressed in gowns and laced pearls in her hair, Marguerite finds herself at the mercy of nature. As the weather turns, blanketing the island in ice, she discovers a faith she'd never before needed.

Popular Book Club Wednesday, November 19th, 6:30pm-7:30pmTrustees Meeting Room
The Popular Book Club brings readers together for lively discussions, laughter, and fresh perspectives. Whether you're a page-turner pro or easing back into books, there's a seat for you at our table! Registration is preferred to ensure you receive a book. Alice Scott is an eternal optimist, still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they're both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: to write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years--or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th century, ... Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she'll choose the person who'll tell her story.

Restoring the Promise: A Discussion about Immigration Process with Attorney Massa Viana Wednesday, November 19th, 6:30pm-8pmHermann Meeting Room
We invite you to this very informative presentation by immigration attorney Antonio Massa Viana. “Restoring the Promise” is a non-partisan, community-based discussion that invites participants to reflect on the impact of current immigration policies, the way immigration has shaped our nation and the constitutional questions that affects both non-U.S and U.S citizens alike. Through real-life stories, legal insight and historical analysis, the program explores what the Constitution guarantees in terms of legal rights and legal protections, why our immigration system is ineffective and needs reforms, myths and realities about immigration, and why ignoring immigration abuses today opens the door to broader civil rights violations tomorrow. There will be dialogue with the audience including Q&A at the end.
