October Art Exhibit
Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past

Calliope Poetry for Community invites the public to view the exhibition of new photography and writing that were inspired by the Falmouth Public Library’s trove of historical postcards.
Wish You Were Here: Postcards from the Past is on display along the art walk for the month of October in the Adult Collections Room for the public to enjoy during library hours!

The Falmouth Public Library’s historical collections of postcards are like time travel. They capture the spirit of the past and bring the people who wrote them alive again, with all their unique personalities, quirks, and humor. Each card has its own story, and this project enabled local writers and photographers to use those stories to reflect on and sometimes reinterpret the postcards' images and messages as a way to enter Falmouth’s history—to capture the contrast between past and present, and to celebrate the unchanging character of the town. Calliope Poetry for Community hopes this exhibit prompts a memory of your own.

The housemaid by Freida McFadden
The Housemaid
by Freida McFadden

"Working here is my last chance to start fresh. I can pretend to be whoever I like. But I'll soon learn that the Winchesters' secrets are far more dangerous than my own... Every day I clean the Winchesters' beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor. I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day..But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don't know who I really am. They don't know what I'm capable of."

The stories in Nuestra América cover each figure's cultural background and childhood, and their accomplishments or contributions to American history. A glossary of terms and discussion question-filled reading guide, created by the National Museum of the American Latino, encourages further research and exploration. The museum has featured twenty-three of these stories in its exhibition ¡Presente! A Latino History of the United States, the first exhibition to feature U.S. Latino history at the national level.

Secret Mall Apartment - Documentary Screening
Tuesday, October 7th, 6:30pm-8pm
Hermann Meeting Room

Join us for this documentary screening of The Secret Apartment (2024) from Executive Producer Jesse Eisenberg and Acclaimed Director Jeremy Workman!

"In 2003, eight young Rhode Islanders created a secret apartment in a hidden space inside the Providence Place Mall and lived in it for four years, filming everything along the way. They snuck in furniture, tapped into the mall’s electricity, and even secretly constructed a brick wall with a locking door, smuggling in over 2 tons of cinderblock. Far more than just a wild prank, the secret apartment became a deeply meaningful place for all its inhabitants – a personal expression of defiance against local gentrification, a boundary-pushing work of public/private art, and finally, a 750 square foot space that sticks it to the man!"

The Secret Apartment is rated Not Rated and has a running time of 1 hour and 31 minutes. English subtitles will be used if available.

VIRTUAL: 10 Years of Daring Heists and Lovable Outcasts in YA Fantasy with Leigh Bardugo
Thursday, October 9th, 7pm-8pm
Online via Zoom

Since publishing in 2015, Leigh Bardugo’s highly popular Six of Crows has taken the world of YA literature by storm–and it’s not hard to see why. The complex fantasy setting, thoughtfully-structured magic system, and deliciously morally gray characters all collide in a world you won’t want to leave and you don’t have to! Join us as we pick the brain of the New York Times bestselling author herself, celebrating the release of her Six of Crows (The Dregs Edition).

Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can't pull it off alone. . . . Six dangerous outcasts. One impossible heist. Kaz's crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don't kill each other first.

In celebration of its decade-old status, the duology will be rereleased in special Dregs Edition paperback copies featuring beautiful new cover art by Harol Bustos, black stained edges, and updated maps. Whether you’re a new reader or a loyal fan, register today to take part in the adventure!
