The One Book Project
October 1st - November 30th
The One Book Project encourages our Kern County community members to share experiences related to a single book's themes through discussions, educational programming, and entertainment.

This year's primary book and supporting titles focus on themes of Native American life and culture.
Meet The Author & Join The Discussion.

Join us for the One Book Project Author Keynote & Book Signing with Deborah Jackson Taffa on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 7 PM at the Icardo Center, CSUB. Taffa, author of the 2025 One Book Project selection Whiskey Tender: A Memoir, will discuss her work, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Free and open to the public. Whiskey Tender—a 2024 National Book Award Finalist and 2025 Carnegie Medal longlist title—explores identity, family, and resilience through Taffa’s experiences growing up between Native and mainstream cultures.
The Main Title
Whiskey tender : a memoir by Deborah Jackson Taffa
Whiskey Tender : A Memoir
by Deborah Jackson Taffa

Reflecting on her past and present, the author, a citizen of the Quechan (Yuma) Nation and Laguna Pueblo, reminds us of how the cultural narratives of her ancestors have been excluded from the central mythologies and structures of the "melting pot" of America, revealing all that is sacrificed for the promise of acceptance.
