How to Read a Painting

Have you ever looked at a painting and wished you could understand it more? We will review some of the more common symbols and tropes seen in Western painting. Join us in unpacking these paintings, improving our visual literacy, and increasing our appreciation of art!

Enjoy a performance by a musical group whose repertoire includes jazz standards from the Great American Songbook and an eclectic mix of classic and current Americana, popular, blues and rock tunes.

Be sure to type your email address carefully, making sure there are no typos or extra spaces. Zoom links are included in your confirmation email (sent right after you register) and a reminder email (sent one day prior to the program). Be sure not to delete them!  A famous actress goes incognito to seek treatment for a medical issue. At the hospital, she meets three remarkable women--an aging rocker, a young mother, and a forever single retired schoolteacher. Friday Movie: A Good Person (2023)

Allison is a young woman with a wonderful fiance, a blossoming career, and supportive family and friends. Her life falls apart following her involvement in a fatal accident. In the following years, she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law that gives her a fighting chance to put her life back together and move forward.

Summer Virtual Book Club: 
Writers & Lovers by Lily King

Join us for our first meeting of the Summer Virtual Book Club, where we will read (or listen to the audiobook version) of Writers & Lovers by Lily King. The book is available as an eBook and eAudiobook through Hoopla. This bookclub will meet virtually over Zoom, so you can join us from wherever the summer takes you!

Sliding Knot Charm Necklace
Mondays, July 10 or 24 at 5:30 PM
at DeMott Lane
Easy and fun charm necklace created with wire wrapped beads and charms. Learn to make double sliding knots to finish with adjustable length leather cord. Led by Josephine.
Both dates are the same class; please only register for one to allow more space for others.

Bead Weaving 101: Square Stitch Bracelet or Anklet
Saturday, July 22 at 1pm at DeMott Lane
Bead weaving is a jewelry making technique using small seed beads, a needle, and thread. When the beads are woven together in a pattern, they create beautiful jewelry! You may want to bring reading glasses with you. Each participant will learn the square stitch to make a bracelet or anklet. Led by Taylor.

Coloring Club

Join us for some creative and relaxing fun with colored pencils, crayons, and coloring pages. Open to ages 6 to adult! No registration required.
 
Alzheimer's New Jersey Family Support Group

Held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, Alzheimer’s New Jersey Family Support Group provides families and caregivers with emotional support and education. For more info or to register (optional), call 888-280-6055. 
 
Pet Loss Support Group

Pet parents who have lost a pet, or anticipate a loss, can share stories and memories with like minds and hearts. The Friends of Nikki Support Group has served the community for over 19 years. 
 
Death Cafe
Thursday, July 27 at 6:00pm at DeMott Lane 
Death is universal but how different people and cultures deal with death is unique. A Death Cafe is an an event where people come together in a safe and friendly environment to bring up a taboo subject—death! Have you been wanting to talk about it but thought it was too weird? Or have you had an experience you’d like to share? Death Café is not necessarily a support group or grief counseling, it is a neutral space to show up together to chat with a death doula and other participants. Meets monthly.
 
Drop-in Chess

We provide the chess boards, all you need is a desire to play. This drop-in adult chess group is open to beginner through advanced level players.

Astronomy Club

Computer Classes
No registration required! All classes are drop-in and first-come first-serve. Bring your own device to class or borrow one of ours. You must be able to use a mouse and be familiar with basic computer concepts such as opening, closing, and re-sizing windows.

Walking the Old Boonton Line
Saturday, June 24 at 1pm at DeMott Lane
Using his photos, drone footage, & lively narration, Wheeler Antabanez will retrace his journey on the abandoned Erie Railroad tracks through eight northern New Jersey towns before they were torn up for the future Essex/Hudson Greenway. Wheeler is the author of several books (available for sale at the program) and a correspondent for Weird NJ.
