Driftwood Public Library

November 2025

Dia de los Muertos
Driftwood Public Library will not have a Dia de los Muertos celebration at the library this year.

To ensure the well-being of their loved ones, our community partners have voted to not hold a public event and to celebrate with their families in private this year.

Winter Solstice Celebration
Monday, December 22, 6:30PM
Driftwood Public Library, Distad Reading Room

Winter Solstice is the official first day of winter and has been a special moment of the year for many centuries. Cultures around the world have marked this occasion in many diverse ways as a time of hope and reflection.

Our Winter Solstice Celebration is open to all ages and will include musical performances, readings, poetry, skits, and dancing that connects us to the winter season.
Refreshments are provided throughout the event.

Interested in performing with music or the spoken word?
Contact Mark Irmscher at (541) 996-1260 or via e-mail at mirmscher@lincolncity.org.
Children's Room Closure
The Children's Room will be closed until further notice.

Construction has begun on the windows in the Children's Room and will continue through this month depending on the weather. During this time all staff, patrons, and volunteers will be unable to access the materials in the room.

If there is something specific you wish to check out, please place a hold on the item and we will try to source it from one of the libraries in our consortium. For browsing, please feel free to look through the carts of returned books to the left of the circulation desk.

For rainy days, our play kitchen and large Legos are still available in the space in front of the Friends Book Sale room.

Keep an eye on our social media and webpage for updates!

November Youth Program Break
All youth programs will be on break until December.

Driftwood Bookworms Book Club:
Driftwood Bookworms Book Club is going on hiatus!

For the forseeable future, we are placing the book club on hiatus until staff are able to resume facilitating the monthly discussions.

Join us for these events hosted by community members at the library!

Mindful Awareness Meditation
Wednesdays from 11 - 12:30 p.m. in the Fischer Room

Tom and Trudi invite anyone interested in joining them to a 90 minute meditation session each Wednesday morning from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm in the library’s Fischer Room (please plan on arriving 5 to 10 minutes early if it’s your first time attending).

Sessions include a welcoming time for introductions, sharing and orienting everyone towards a contemplative space. Individuals are invited to share specifically and/or generally any areas of interest or concern that they’ve come with. Those who wish only to listen may pass on sharing.

The session may or may not include short videos or recordings.

Tom and Trudi lead two meditations, both of which are silent. The first lasts for 20 minutes, followed by a short break for movement, lavatory breaks, and general interaction. The second meditation runs for 10-15 minutes.

The session ends with a transition featuring a designated reading and informal farewells.

Real Yoga

REAL YOGA: A Revolution in Science

Free classes available to the public

This is the opportunity of a lifetime for those who can put a bit of discipline into their daily routine, working toward a better quality of life.

The student will learn the most powerful and comprehensive system of yoga practice available on the planet. This science is several thousand years old, and is as vital, valid, and needed today as it was it was from the inception. We will cover the history and philosophy of the lifestyle. Why and how it came about.

Comprehensive training in diet will be covered, looking at food in a way we were never taught in our traditional schooling. The effect of our current diet on disease and accelerated aging will be addressed.

Practice of the yoga "asanas" will be imparted (the stretching poses and aerobic movements associated with the traditional western adaptation of "yoga"). Benefits to your state of physical health will be realized within the first session.

The main focus, the main gem of this program, is guidance on the ultimate inward journey.
The practice of meditation, or "mindfulness". It is here that the aspirant will experience a progressively deeper understanding of Life, leading to a more clear vision of who we are, and why we are here in the first place.

John and Cecilia will be your co-instructors. John trained extensively in the US, Sweden and India, and the two have taught this gift around the world for over 50 years. They are currently administrators for the Newport jail yoga project and have been involved with the NESS Club yoga classes for seniors with disabilities for the past several years. You are in good hands.

Our one and only motive in this offering is for your progress and well being. All we require of you in exchange, is to show up with an open mind and with the determination to implement daily practice of the knowledge and new life skills you will receive. This is ultimately a celebration of you and the beauty you hold within.

Classes are every Friday in the Community Room at Driftwood Public Library, in the middle of town: 801 SW HIGHWAY 101, on the second floor (across the street from Burger King, and adjacent to McKay's Supermarket). 2:00 pm until about 3:15. These classes are completely free of any charge. All ages, belief systems, religion, background, previous experience with "yoga" beginner to advanced welcome. Those having questions may email John and Cecilia at yogasource10@gmail.com

The Death Cafe will be taking a break for the holidays.

Due to Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Death Cafe will not meet in November and December. We look forward to seeing you again on January 30th.

Oregon Coast Aquarium Culture Passes!

We realized that it's not possible for everyone to be at the library when we open on the first of the month, so to make distribution of our Oregon Coast Aquarium Culture Passes as fair as possible, we've made some changes to how we’ll distribute them: we will now be drawing names for passes on the first of each month.

Only adult Driftwood cardholders are eligible to enter the lottery. To enter, simply visit the library, give us a call at 541-996-2277, or email librarian@lincolncity.org. We'll need your name and phone number, and we ask that only one person per household or family enter their name for the lottery. You'll only need to enter the lottery once: those entrants whose names aren’t drawn will automatically be rolled into the next month’s lottery.

Each pass allows the cardholder and three guests free general admission to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. There are four passes available per month.  Passes check out for up to 30 days, and can be checked out once per calendar year. To add your name to the lottery list, call the library at 541-996-2277. Please have your library card ready.

This program is made possible through the generous support of the Franz Bakery Foundation, U.S. Bank, the Doris & Michael Garcia Fund, the Oregon Cultural Trust, and the Lincoln County Cultural Coalition.
