A Message from the Library Director
Chip Schrader
Legacy is a concept that we all grapple with, we all want to leave those who come after us in a better place, or at least find meaningful ways to signal to future generations that we care about them. Finding ways to make the planet more pristine or passing along a secret recipe that brings the family together are the most common ways we see this happen. On the charitable front, many non-profits have a pathway to give as a piece of estate planning. Scarborough Public Library’s 1899 Society was formed for this very reason.

Next time you check out an item, you will see an honorarium to the right of the circulation desks with members of this group. If you ever wondered where a local legacy could be made that serves the greater good, your legal advisor could give you information about leaving the library a planned gift to serve the community for future generations.

You may follow this link on our website that outlines the ways in which you can become a member of the 1899 Society: Securing our future | Scarborough Public Library (scarboroughlibrary.org)

Our new Development Coordinator, Marianne Walters, and I are also happy to discuss with you how the 1899 Society works. And always, our deepest gratitude to our donors and library users, we are here because of you. Thank you!

Color Analysis Basics
Wednesday, July 24, 1-2pm

Why does a color that looks great on one person look lousy on another?
Learn about Color Analysis with Julie Cunningham Color.

Learn the basics of color analysis and how to tell if you are cool or warm, and what the deal is with the "color seasons."

Color analysis is trending on TikTok, but why is it a big deal and how can we use it to look our best?

This is not an individual color consultation. We'll learn about it and be given the tools to figure it out ourselves and have a good time doing it! Julie will be leaving at 2pm, but feel free to stick around and we can try our best guesses at determining our color seasons together based on what we learned!

Register for your spot as space is limited: Color Analysis Basics
Test out an EBIKE!
Thursday, July 25, 9am-12pm
Take a spin around the block on an ebike! Travis from the Bicycle Coalition from Maine will have a small fleet of ebikes in the parking lot for you to take for a spin. Ask all your ebike questions!

We'll be getting ebikes back to borrow for up to two days at a time in late August, so this a great chance to give one a spin for a shorter period to see if you like it.

First come first served.

Interlibrary Loan Update
Interlibrary Loan is (kind of) back!

We're excited to announce that we are partnering with eight of our library friends (Baxter Memorial Library [Gorham], Windham Public Library, South Portland Public Library, Thomas Memorial [Cape Elizabeth], Falmouth Memorial Library, Walker Memorial Library [Westbrook], McArthur Library [Biddeford] and the Gray Public Library) to open up interlibrary loan borrowing!

As you may recall, last month, we shared the news that the statewide delivery of items between libraries was being shut down while the state worked out a contract with a new delivery provider.

A number of us started talking about ways we might alleviate this drought of shared materials and came up with our own - limited - system of delivery between locations (which we have affectionately dubbed "Mini-ME").

You may request items, as usual, through the online catalog (Minerva.maine.edu) and, if an item is held by one of the libraries in this group, your hold request will go through.
Delivery from library to library will not be as speedy as you may be used to, but it will work - we just ask that you be patient, as we (the library staff) are transporting the materials from point to point.

This is NOT a long term solution, but a patch to a temporary disruption in the statewide van delivery service. We all hope that the regular delivery service will be back up and running sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we hope we can fulfill most of your requests among our nine participating libraries.
