A Note from your Librarian

Thanks to everyone who came to last night's discussion of All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda! I think that last night's group is the most people we've had so far. It is probably fair to say that while most of us very much enjoyed the book, everyone was pretty confused with the timeline. If you enjoyed the book but are looking for an easier-to-follow plot, I recommend Miranda's The Girl from Widow Hills. She also JUST published a new one (end of last month), titled You Belong Here for those who are interested.

I also announced November's book pick which will be A Talent for Murder by Peter Swanson. Here's the hook: a newlywed librarian(!!) thinks that her husband might be a serial killer.

September's book, The Mystery of Mrs. Christie, is available for pickup at the library now, and we will be meeting here on September 23 at 6:00 to talk about it. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Happy reading,
Chloe

Upcoming Book Selections
September Pick: The Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict
September 23, 2025, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Waterford Public Library

In December 1926, Agatha Christie goes missing. Investigators find her empty car on the edge of a deep, gloomy pond, the only clues some tire tracks nearby and a fur coat left in the car — strange for a frigid night. Her husband and daughter have no knowledge of her whereabouts, and England unleashes an unprecedented manhunt to find the up-and-coming mystery author. Eleven days later, she reappears, just as mysteriously as she disappeared, claiming amnesia and providing no explanations for her time away. Copies will be available for pickup at the Waterford Public Library beginning August 26, 2025. This book is also available as an e-book on Libby.

October Pick: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
October 28 2025, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Waterford Public Library

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom. Copies will be available for pickup beginning September 23, 2025. This book is also available as an e-book on Libby.

Martha Ratliff conceded long ago that she’d likely spend her life alone. She was fine with it, happy with her solo existence, stimulated by her job as an archival librarian, constantly surrounded by thought-provoking ideas and the books she loved. But then she met Alan, a charming and sweet-natured divorcee with a job that took him on the road for half the year. When he asked her to marry him, she said yes, even though he still felt a little bit like a stranger.

A year in and the marriage was good, except for that strange blood streak on the back of one of his shirts he’d worn to a conference in Denver. Her curiosity turning to suspicion, Martha investigates the cities Alan visited over the past year and uncovers a disturbing pattern—five unsolved cases of murdered women. Copies will be available for pickup beginning October 28, 2025. The book is also available on Libby.
