Marigold Library System Celebrates New Headquarters Building
More than 100 dignitaries, stakeholders, library board members, and staff from across the province walked through the doors of Marigold’s new headquarters building on June 17 for a much-anticipated celebration.

Marigold Library Board Chair John Getz welcomed several special presenters, including MP Martin Shields (Bow River), MLA Leela Aheer (Chestermere-Strathmore), Town of Strathmore Councillor and former Marigold Library Board member Denise Peterson, Wheatland County Reeve Amber Link, and Municipal Affairs Public Library Services Branch representative Kerry Anderson. Western Irrigation District (WID) Board Chair Dan Shute and Vice-Chair Ray Kettenbach were among those delivering heartfelt speeches and inspirational messages about Marigold and the building’s future opportunities.

“We now have a beautiful, modern facility with greater capacity, up-to-date safety features, additional space to carry out day-to-day activities and room for future growth of services,” said Marigold Library Board Chair John Getz. “We could not celebrate without the inclusion of our joint facility partners, the Western Irrigation District. The WID shared our vision for cost-sharing and maximizing the use of this large multipurpose space. Our organizations share much synergy as we both share a commitment to community engagement and service to both urban and rural Albertans.”

In 2017, Marigold and the WID collaborated to purchase land and co-own the facility. With some financial support through an infrastructure grant from Municipal Affairs and Public Library Services Branch, and careful budgeting by the Marigold Board and staff throughout the project, Getz added that the project came in 10 percent – or $800,000 – under the projected budget.

While the vision and planning for a new Marigold headquarters building was recognized over a decade ago, construction on the building began in September of 2020, with staff settling into their new office space in the fall of last year. The new 30,000+ square foot operational space houses more office and meeting rooms, a large garage for Marigold’s delivery fleet, a bigger staging area for the IT department, storage rooms, and a state-of-the-art automated sortation system.

“It is heartwarming to have such strong support from all levels of government and our community friends,” said Marigold CEO Lynne Price, who served as project coordinator in bringing the vision of the building to reality. “I want to thank each one here for their contributions to Marigold Library System. We have incredible support from our stakeholders, our employees, and the board members who steer our organization.”

The event was also an opportunity to recognize the contributions of Marigold Library Board Chair Lynda Lyster, who had been a member of the Board since 2005, and former Marigold CEO Michelle Toombs – who both retired last month.

Summer Programming
Marigold Summer Programs
We are excited to share that Marigold Library System is once again offering a number of programs for children, teens, and adults this summer!

For children, we are thrilled to be back delivering in-person TD Summer Reading Club themed programs at member libraries. These programs are similar to those offered in previous years, where Danielle, our Summer Program Support Assistant, will be travelling to deliver them at 21 of our member libraries. In-person programs will all involve storytimes, crafts, and STEM activities.

Similar to past years, teens are invited to participate in a summerlong reading challenge for the chance to win prizes! By logging each book they read this summer, and reading in specific genres or categories, teens will earn entries in a grand prize draw exclusive to the Teen Summer Reading Challenge. In addition to the reading portions of the challenge, teens can also complete 4 activity challenges to earn additional entries, including a photography challenge and a writing challenge. The second activity challenge is currently live, and photography submissions are being accepted until July 24th for teens to claim their entries.

For patrons of all ages, we have planned a YRCA Book Survivor. In 4 rounds, patrons will progressively vote out books to determine our surviving book. By voting, patrons are entered into a draw to win one of the books. The second round of voting for Book Survivor is running until July 24th.

One new program being offered this year is STEM activities, where instructions for several STEM challenges and experiments have been provided. Patrons can try their hand at making s'mores in their very own solar oven, make homemade rock candy, and learn how to create their own fidget brainteaser! Anyone is welcome to participate, and everyone who tries an activity out is encouraged to share a picture to be added to a gallery on the Marigold Programs website. All the activities and instructions can be found at www.marigoldprograms.ca.

Indigneous Information
Indigenous TikTok
I spend a good deal of time on TikTok. I joined it because my granddaughters were using it and I felt it was too adult of a space for them to be on without adult supervision, so I joined intending only to keep an eye on who was interacting with them.

It did not take long, however, for me to begin to be intrigued by content creators. Like any other social media platform, TikTok is driven by algorithms so you tend to see random posts at the beginning and then as you linger over certain content or interact with certain creators you begin to see more of what the site thinks you want to see.

I began with booktok, arttok, and foodtok but the first time an Indigenous creator popped up, that became my main interest. I thought I would share a few of my favorite Indigenous creators with all of you, but don’t let the list limit you because if you search #IndigenousTikTok you will find a treasure trove of creators. I follow about 1800 people and I think at least 500 of those are Indigenous so it was not an easy task to narrow it down to just a few.

The first Indigenous creator I followed was @sherry.mckay. She is an incredibly funny woman with a big heart. Her topics range from full on comedy to serious information about issues Indigenous people face.

You'll find that there are plenty of creators who use the platform to sell artwork, two of my favourites are @metisprint.ca and @easternwoodlandart.  They both have a range of content that offers teaching and lets you see and purchase the amazing art they create.

I also follow an Inuk woman whose passions are language, culture, family, and soap making. You can find her by searching @bernicekootooclarke.

I must include @indigenouslibrarian who has amazing content for our profession.  The recently published “The Collector and the Collected: Decolonizing Area Studies Librarianship” includes a chapter she wrote.

Lastly, one of my favourite all time creators is @thatnativeguy79. He cracks me up, teaches me, and touches my heart, and I never know which it is going to be.

There are a wealth of other Indigenous TikTokkers you can follow. If you are interested in seeing who I follow or in my content you can look me up; @gagaoffive is my username.

Happy scrolling!

4 Seasons of Reconciliation
RBC has provided funding to allow participants to take the course "4 Seasons of Reconciliation" for free until August 31. The course is a self-paced online program which offers 10 modules on truth and reconciliation and takes approximately ten hours to complete. Upon completion, participants will receive a “Certificate of Completion” issued by First Nations University of Canada. This is a great opportunity, especially for staff who may not have participated in any reconciliation training. More information on the course can be found here and you can enroll in it here!

In Their Moccasins
In Their Moccasins is a game with quizzes and narrative branching (choose your own adventure style) elements. It is designed to build capacity for empathy for Indigenous students’ lived realities. Many Canadians want to think of Indigenous issues as a thing of the past, yet the horrors of colonization continue to have an impact and Indigenous students display a great deal of resilience in navigating their day to day lives. However, we need to move away from placing the expectation of resilience on the individual, and towards societal change. That starts with education. This game, designed by Indigenous students, will be a helpful tool for educators and folks looking to build their Indigenous knowledges skill set.

Information about the project can be found here. The book/project itself is available here.

Annual Report
PLSB has completed their project to review, streamline, and revise the Annual Report and Survey. Some of the changes to the report include:
  • Streamlined reporting for personnel, collections, and circulation
  • Redundant and irrelevant questions removed
  • Fields added to capture virtual programming, electronic equipment lending, and technology training activity
Because there are some new fields, respondents to the Annual Report and Survey will need to start collecting some new data for those fields. A checklist outlining the new data fields has been created for reference, as well as an updated Reference Key which provides definitions for each field and highlights the changes. They have also created a visual template showing a mockup of what the new survey and annual report will look like in LibPAS once it has finished being created.

Big Library Read
The next Big Library Read takes place from July 13 until July 27 and the title is The Girl in His Shadow by Audrey Blake!

The Girl in His Shadow takes place in London in 1845. Raised by surgeon Dr. Horace Croft after losing her parents, Nora Beady knows little about conventional life and much about suturing and anatomical illustrations of dissections. Women face dire consequences if caught practicing medicine, but in Croft's private clinic Nora is his most trusted—and secret—assistant… until the new surgical resident Dr. Daniel Gibson arrives. To protect Dr. Croft and his practice Nora must learn to play a new and uncomfortable role—that of a proper young lady. When she makes a discovery that could change the field forever, Nora faces an impossible choice. Remain invisible and let the men around her take credit for her work, or step into the light—even if it means being destroyed by her own legacy.

What is Big Library Read? It's a reading program facilitated by OverDrive through your library that connects readers around the world with the same ebook at the same time without any wait lists or holds. The Girl in His Shadow is the 28th selection of this program which began in 2013 and takes place three times per year.

Visit biglibraryread.com to download marketing materials for social media. Readers can join an online discussion about the book at biglibraryread.com/join-the-discussion, and a reading guide is also available to encourage conversation and help people get the most from The Girl in His Shadow, great for if you plan to host this title as a book club in your library! Bonus - use #biglibraryread on social media for a chance to win a Big Library Read giveaway basket!

Young Reader's Choice Awards
YRCA 2022 Winners
The 2022 YRCA Winners have been announced! Click here to see how many votes the winners and the runner ups received in each category!

YRCA 2023 Display
The 2023 display is now available to book! Each kit will come with the books, display, and a laminated poster. Please make sure to send the poster back as well when your turn is up! Please fill out the website form here to book the display.

Marigold is providing a number of resources for you to use to promote this display and award. This includes an 8 ½ x 11 poster featuring all of the books, a laminated poster, bookmarks, and ballots with the display. If you need extras or want them before/after you get the display, please let Barb know. There is a PDF of all of these items on the Shared Drive in a folder named YRCA.

There is one more component to YRCA that we encourage libraries to take part in as well, and that’s partnering with schools to share this information. These two items are on the shared drive – if you are making any changes to them, please save them on your own computer before doing so. They include the following:
  • Book Talks: these are the notes you would use to present the titles to students; these are also in the notes field of the PowerPoint
  • PowerPoint: this is what would be shown to the students
Kids love to vote for their favourite title! A big part of YRCA is the kids being able to vote for their favourite title. There is a survey link at www.marigold.ab.ca/YRCA that can be used by either the children themselves, or for bulk vote entry by library staff (from the paper votes). You can also encourage teachers to collect votes in their classes so kids can see what books their peers like the best (and then submit all the votes individually). Voting will close mid-April 2023, and although we won’t be keeping track of how many times someone votes, they should only be voting once in each category, so make sure you emphasize that. We know the books circulated this past year but we didn’t get very many votes, so please encourage them to make their voice heard and vote for their favourite title!

Even if you don’t get a chance to book the display, or decide you don’t want it, you can still take advantage of everything else that we are offering and promote the award anyway! Hang up the poster, hand out bookmarks, do presentations at schools or talk about the award with kids in the library, and display the books that you do own.

As always, we would love to feature any stories or pictures about this display/program in the newsletter, so please share them with us so that we can do so!
