Professional Development Resources for Library Staff & Board Members February 2019
|
|
|
February 11, 2019 | 2:00pm - 3:00pm (MT)
You can create a library workplace where focused, motivated, and self-directed employees want to come to work, do their work, interact effectively, and develop and grow. You can use coaching to get these results. Coaching is the use of a series of one or more formal and informal pre-disciplinary meetings, that focus on an employee's performance or behavior. The goals range from career development and promotion to correcting problematic behaviors, to improving performance in specific areas. It’s an employee-centered and time-focused process, using “homework” (projects given to the employees to complete at work), to move the process forward, and setting milestones.
|
|
Library ethics include issues of privacy, transparency, fairness, and access to information. These lofty issues translate into policies and procedures that need to be taken seriously.
Examples: Not speaking about customer borrowing habits, not exempting privileged insiders from paying fines, and ensuring that the older library user with dimming vision and bad knees is as welcome as the fit and flexible teenager (regarding books on the bottom shelves). In this program, you’ll learn about typical “ethics” mistakes and take a library ethics quiz. How well will your library do? At the conclusion of webinar, participants will be able to: - Know how four basic library ethical principles translate into ethical staff behavior
- Evaluate library operations for ethical issues, from how your finances are audited to how stakeholders have input into collection development

Companies spend around $90 billion dollars annually on non-cash incentive programs. Yet, even among the most admired companies, satisfaction with recognition is almost always among the lowest rated items on employee opinion surveys. With so much investment, why is there so little return?
Join nationally recognized employee engagement experts, Dr. Bob Nelson, President of Nelson Motivation, and Dr. Rick Garlick, Vice President and Strategy Consultant for Magid Associates as they discuss the following: - Poorly designed recognition and incentive programs are, at best, ineffective, and at worst, de-motivating.
- Well-intentioned HR professionals often design recognition and incentive programs that they personally find motivating, without necessarily considering the feelings or preferences of those on the receiving end.
- There is often a slanted focus toward tangible rewards without considering the potential of non-tangible rewards.
- Segmentation research is an effective tool for designing employee reward and recognition systems in the same way that customer segmentation is an effective way of marketing products and services.

In the cast of characters creating intrusive busyness in the workplace, email is undoubtedly the Voldemort. This tool, designed for our benefit, hijacks time and resources but is so culturally baked-in that even the most organized of us are drowning in it. Juliet Funt, the CEO of efficiency firm WhiteSpace at Work shares methods to ride the flow of our incoming email with more ease; send the emails others want to read and reduce the chronic stress associated with email. You will be challenged with specific frameworks that allow us to reduce both total email volume and the percentage of low-value sends.

In this webinar, we will cover the different types of environments one may want to code for; whether that is apps, websites, programs that run on Windows, scripting, and more. Self-paced eCourse Making Space for Active Learning in Your Library is a self-paced learning experience to guide your library through the process of rethinking and reconfiguring physical space to make room for active learning and work with your community to create new services and programs.
The content originated with the Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces project, which guided 15 small libraries from around the country through this process of transformation in their spaces and services. (We are pleased to announce that OCLC has received a supplemental IMLS grant that will allow the next iteration of the WebJunction program Small Libraries Create Smart Spaces. The application process will open in January 2019 for libraries interested in becoming a Smart Spaces library.) The libraries in the first cohort ranged in size of population served from 570 (Hot Springs, NC) to just over 16,000 (Cornwall, NY). Examples of these libraries’ successful application of the process are included in all three courses. Although the project was specifically designed to be actionable by small and rural libraries, the process can apply to any library type or size. The program is presented in a three-course sequence. - Active Learning and Community Discovery introduces the concepts of active learning and placemaking, and the tools and process for community discovery.
- From Discovery to Design builds on the results of the community discovery process, adapting design thinking approaches to arrive at an actionable idea and a space ready for transformation.
- Action Planning and Implementation takes the planning through the steps of making the space and service transformation happen.

Electronic Resources & Libraries 2019 Austin, TX March 3 - 6, 2019 The goal of the ER&L Conference is to bring together information professionals from libraries and related industries to improve the way we collect, manage, maintain, and make accessible electronic resources in an ever-changing online environment. We do this once a year at an in-person conference. In addition, sessions are recorded and made available online in an online conference. ER&L allows for cross-pollination of ideas across fields of librarianship not often brought together in traditional public services or technical services conferences.

March 6 - 8, 2019 $80 US The Collective is a conference-like coming together of next-generation librarians but without all the things that make regular conferences suck.
HERE'S 6 OF THE MANY WAYS WE'RE DIFFERENT: - EVEN FOOTING: Everyone who attends is an active participant and pays an equally low registration fee. Celebrity culture is for tabloids, not conferences.
- ACTIVE LEARNING: We emphasize skill-building, tangible takeaways, and networking. No “CV filler” or“sage on a stage” presentations here!
- LOW COST: Designed for affordability, those within driving distance of Knoxville should be able to cover all associated costs of attendance for around $500.
- PARTNERSHIPS, NOT SALES: We think developing relationships with vendors is far more effective than hard sales, so we program real discussions rather than sales pitches.
- PRACTITIONER-FOCUSED: While administrators can certainly bring a wealth of knowledge and level of expertise, we believe that the ratio of admins to front-line workers should be reflective of the real-world landscape.
- NON-PROFIT: Our event is put on by volunteers who give their time in service to the profession. We have no paid or dedicated staff and do not profit off of registration fees; in fact, attendance costs are subsidized for all participants thanks to our hard fundraising work.

March 7 - 8, 2019 Presented by Library Journal and School Library Journal, the 2019 Public Library Think Tank will convene public library leaders and directors, youth services and young adult librarians, along with other leading thinkers on the role of youth services, literacy, and learning trends. From input to engagement to full co-creation, the trend in libraries is an ever-deeper collaboration with the people we serve. Co-creation brings in new users, delivers more of what they want and need, and fosters a sense of welcome and ownership. Learn more about this strategic approach, and how to embed it in your organization from day one, empowering kids and teens to build skills and make a difference as they shape a stronger library and community.
