Bookmarks: Commonwealth by Ann Patchett
Friday, July 21, 2:00 pm
Library Meeting Room
Hilda DeMuth Lutze will review Commonwealth: A Novel by Ann Patchett. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating’s christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny’s mother, Beverly—thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. The story spans five decades, exploring how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Commonwealth is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.
The program will also be offered at the Westchester Township Historical Museum on Thursday, July 20 at 2:00pm.

Cries from Syria Film Showing
Saturday, July 22, 1:00 pm
Library Meeting Room
The library and the local group Concerned Citizens for the Syrian Refugees, will host a showing of Cries from Syria. The film is a searing, comprehensive account of a brutal five-year conflict from the inside out, drawing on hundreds of hours of war footage from Syrian activists and citizen journalists, as well as testimony from child protestors, leaders of the revolution, human rights defenders, ordinary citizens, and high-ranking army generals who defected from the government. Despite experiencing great suffering, they have never lost hope for the future. Their collective stories are a cry for attention and help from a world that little understands their reality or agrees on what to do about it. Cries from Syria contains content and images that some may find disturbing. It should not be viewed by children under the age of 14 without adult supervision. A discussion will follow the film and light refreshments will be served.
