Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program
|
|
|
June 11 - July 28, 2018 Celebrate the joy of reading and earn fun rewards along the way! Sign up now for the Summer Reading Program at the Youth Services Desk. It’s easy to participate–just stop by the Youth Services Desk to log your reading time. Any kind of reading counts–books, eBooks, graphic novels, newspapers, magazines, audiobooks, reading aloud to someone else, or being read to. Everyone is welcome to join the fun–children, teens, and adults! The last day to record reading hours and enter the raffles is Saturday, July 28. The last day to pick up prizes is Saturday, August 4.

Summer Reading Program: Labyrinth Film Showing

Libraries rock! Join us for a free Summer Reading Program showing of the classic Jim Henson movie starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Light refreshments will be available. Children up to 18 years of age who arrive within the first 30 minutes of the film will receive a chance to win a copy of the DVD. Synopsis: Teenage Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) journeys through a maze to recover her baby brother (Toby Froud) from a goblin king (David Bowie). Rated PG. Runtime: 101 minutes.

Summer Reading Program: Lip Sync Battle!

Libraries rock! Lip sync along with popular songs sung by Kidz Bop. The whole family will have fun and rock out. Lyrics and craft microphones provided. The most rockin’ lip sync performance of each song will win a small prize. Craft supplies to make your own microphone will be available for you to take home or work on at the library while you watch other contestants perform. Too shy to perform? Stop by anyway to watch all of the fun and help vote for the winners by cheering for your favorite performances!

Film Showing: Make Mine Music

Share in Walt Disney’s extraordinary vision of pairing imaginative stories with spectacular music in Disney’s 8th full-length animated classic. In the tradition of Fantasia, Make Mine Music is a glorious collection of musically charged animated shorts featuring the fun-filled favorite, Peter and the Wolf, narrated by Sterling Holloway, the beloved voice behind Winnie the Pooh. Children ages 18 and under who arrive by 10:30 am will receive a chance to win a copy of the movie. Light refreshments provided. Rated G. This Summer Reading Program activity is fun for the whole family.

Movies in Washington Park: Coco

The Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department and the library collaborate for summer Movies in Washington Park. The July movie is Coco. Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. The movies are shown at the North Pointe Pavilion at dusk. Mark your calendar for Paddington 2 on August 17.

Christmas in July: Arthur Christmas Film Showing

It’s Christmas in July! Leave the sweltering summer heat outside and cool off with us with a free showing of the movie Arthur Christmas. We’ll make a holly, jolly craft too. Light refreshments will be available. Children up to 18 years of age who arrive within the first 30 minutes of the film will receive a chance to win a copy of the DVD. Synopsis: Everyone knows that each Christmas, Santa Claus delivers presents to every last child on Earth. What everyone doesn’t know is that Santa accomplishes the feat with a very high-tech operation beneath the North Pole. But when the unthinkable happens, and Santa misses one child out of hundreds of millions, someone has to save the day. It’s up to Arthur (James McAvoy), Santa’s youngest son, to deliver a present to the forgotten tyke before Christmas morning dawns. Rated PG. Runtime: 98 minutes.

Register at any time for this free program designed to promote language development and a love of reading in young children. Your child will receive a special surprise (choice of an age-appropriate book or CD) for each set of 100 books that are read to them (or that they read on their own). For children ages birth through entering kindergarten.
