We Sold Our Souls
by Grady Hendrix
Getting the band back together: In this pulpy Faustian fable with a heavy metal twist, washed-up guitarist Kris embarks on a redemptive road trip to reconnect with her old bandmates and stop their former frontman from unleashing hell on earth.

| Dracul by Dacre Stoker and J.D. BarkerThen: As a boy, Bram Stoker was on death's door when his strange nanny, Ellen Crone, saved him with a bite before vanishing from his life.
Now: Years later, the seemingly ageless Ellen is spotted, sending Bram and his compatriots across Europe to investigate her connection to a sinister creature who has her in his thrall...and who wants Bram, too.
Why you might like it: Co-written by Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew, this atmospheric "prequel" to Dracula reimagines the origins of the 1897 classic -- and of Stoker himself. |

| Stranded by Bracken MacLeodIce-bound: After a catastrophic storm sends the Arctic Promise off-course, the crew falls ill to a strange flu-like ailment. Now stuck in thickening ice and fog, the few healthy crewmates set out to investigate a looming shape on the horizon.
Why you might like it: Nothing is quite as it seems in this visceral and claustrophobic thriller.
Want a taste? "The void churned and swelled, reaching up to pull them down into frigid darkness, clamoring to embrace them, every one." |

Subhuman
by Michael McBride
At a research station in Antarctica, five of the world’s top scientists have been brought together to solve one of the greatest mysteries in human history. Deep beneath the ice, the submerged ruins of a lost civilization hold the key to the strange mutations that each scientist has encountered across the globe. When a series of sound waves trigger the ancient organisms, a new kind of evolution begins. Latching onto a human host—crossbreeding with human DNA—a long-extinct life form is reborn. Its kind has not walked the earth for thousands of years. Its instincts are fiercer, more savage, than any predator alive. And its prey are the scientists who unleashed it, the humans who spawned it, and the tender living flesh on which it feeds.

The North Water: A Novel
by Ian McGuire
Behold the man: stinking, drunk, and brutal. Henry Drax is a harpooner on the Volunteer, a Yorkshire whaler bound for the rich hunting waters of the arctic circle. Also aboard for the first time is Patrick Sumner, an ex-army surgeon with a shattered reputation, no money, and no better option than to sail as the ship's medic on this violent, filthy, and ill-fated voyage. In India, during the Siege of Delhi, Sumner thought he had experienced the depths to which man can stoop, but now, trapped in the wooden belly of the ship with Drax, he encounters pure evil and is forced to act. As the true purposes of the expedition become clearer, the confrontation between the two men plays out amid the freezing darkness of an arctic winter.

| The Terror by Dan SimmonsTrapped! In this well-researched and intricately plotted fictionalization of the disastrous Franklin Expedition, the crews of the HMS Terror and HMS Erebus reckon with frostbite, snow-blindness, disease, mutiny...and a monstrous creature on the ice.
Reviewers say: "Outstanding" (Booklist); "One of Simmons' best" (Kirkus).
Book buzz: AMC's new horror anthology series (also called The Terror) adapted this grisly historical novel for its first season, which debuted in March 2018. |
