Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story
Sunday, May 5, 2:00 pm
Library Meeting Room
Edward Albee’s hugely successful first play, The Zoo Story, is a mesmerizing encounter between two distinctly different men, Peter and Jerry, who meet in Central Park one afternoon. First staged in 1959, The Zoo Story catapulted Albee to the top of American theater. Good theater should inform, entertain and challenge. The Zoo Story is a strong example of such an ethic and, after 45 years, the brief meeting in the park between Peter and Jerry, with its tight dialogue, a challenging premise, and an unsettling ending, is still powerful. Starring local actors Ryan Liddell and Jacob West. Directed by Tara Lonzo.

Bookmarks: Warlight and The English Patient
Friday, May 17, 2:00 pm
Library Meeting Room
Michael Ondaatje likes to begin his novels with a cinematic opening image. In The English Patient, rain begins to fall as Hana surveys her devastated domain. Warlight, set in the shadowy underworld of postwar London, has one of the most irresistible opening sentences you’re likely to read: “In 1945,” it begins, “our parents went away and left us in the care of two men who may have been criminals.” Dennis Norman will review both titles and give his take on the Canadian literary giant’s work. This program will be offered at the Westchester Township Museum in Chesterton, Thursday, May 16th at 2:00 pm.

The Golfmore Hotel: A Grand Place
Sunday, May 19, 2:00 pm
Library Meeting Room
The Golfmore Hotel was located on the shores of Lake Michigan in the Michigan Shores/Grand Beach subdivisions. During a brief period from 1923-1939 the Golfmore Hotel was comparable in amenities, size and appearance to Mackinac Island’s Grand Hotel. Tom Suhs has researched the Golfmore Hotel and will tell its history through photographs, period postcards, newspaper advertisements and articles, newsreel videos, period music and promotional brochures. Highlights include its role as a popular vacation and winter sports destination and as the location of boxer training camps for pugilists Georges Carpentier, Tommy Gibbons and “The Cinderella Man” James Braddock.
