Library Events for Adults September 2019

Library Renovation Begins September 3 Phase 2 of the library renovation project begins September 3! This phase will include the creation of small group study rooms, a small conference room, an expanded public computer lab with new equipment, a renovated Indiana Room, a refreshed Learning Center, new lounge seating and tables with data and electrical drops, new end panels, and new carpeting. During construction, many services for adults will be limited. From September 3 through mid-October, adult fiction, non-fiction, and reference materials will not be available. All items checked out before September 3 will have a due date of October 14. The reference desk and a limited number of computer stations will be relocated temporarily to the Meeting Room. Tutoring/literacy, interlibrary loan, Homebound Services, proctoring, and the resume/job application program will be temporarily unavailable during the first stage of construction. Some services may return as construction progresses. Please check back for more details. The library building may close for a short period of time while carpeting is completed in the front lobby. Please consult the library’s website/social media for closure information. We thank you for your patience and understanding!

Sunday Hours Resume September 8
Beginning Sunday, September 8, the library will be open on Sundays from 1 -5 PM.

Friends of the Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Library are holding a First Friday book sale in the library outdoor plaza. In the event of bad weather, the sale will be inside the library. Donations are welcome! Please call 219-873-3049 to arrange book pickup.

Readings in Elementary Spanish 1

Increase vocabulary and improve your reading in Spanish. The prerequisite is a previous study of beginning Spanish. The class is free, but a $6.00 textbook will be available at the first session.

Writing Out Loud: Viola Shipman, Pen Name of Wade Rouse

The 35th season of Writing Out Loud begins with author Wade Rouse, the internationally best-selling author of nine books, which have been translated into nearly 20 languages. Wade chose his grandmother’s name, Viola Shipman, as a pen name to honor the woman whose heirlooms and family stories inspire his fiction. His novels include The Charm Bracelet, a 2017 Michigan Notable Book of the Year; The Hope Chest; and The Recipe Box. His latest novel is The Summer Cottage. He recently signed a three-book deal with HarperCollins. The Heirloom Garden will be published in April 2020.

The Practice of Writing: Workshop

Author and teacher Hilda Demuth-Lutze offers a workshop for adults on opening the door to creative expression and setting forth on the writer’s journey. Films on DVD Series: Echo in the Canyon

The film series returns with the showing of the documentary, Echo in the Canyon. It is a look at how musical groups such as The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas & the Papas birthed the beginnings of the Laurel Canyon music scene and how the echo of these artists’ creations reverberated across the world. Rated PG-13.

Writing Out Loud: Mary Ruth Clarke

Mary Ruth Clarke is a playwright and screenwriter. She co-wrote and starred in the original Meet the Parents and co-adapted it into the blockbuster film version, starring Robert De Niro. Her play, Bonhoeffer’s Cost, has had runs in Austin, Texas, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Her farce, Suffer The Long Night, has been produced in Los Angeles and Austin. Her play, Address Unknown, was produced in Chicago. Her solo performance, I Could Kill Him for Dying, also ran in Chicago. She is a Resident Playwright at Chicago Dramatists.
